Phenom 2 1090t Overclocking

Thread Starter
I have had this processor for a while now and i'm not getting the performance I wanted from it. Every game I play seems to lag at medium settings and the only thing I can do is overclock. I have tried overclocking before but I couldn't get it running at a high speed without it crashing. I am not good with computers and I could really use some help. The next logical step I can think of is to get better cooling. I've been looking into water cooling and it seems effective but i'm not sure if it would work with my rig. I have a medium sized case and a 750 watt Thermaltake PSU. Please, If you have any idea what type of water cooling system I should get please let me know. My goal is to get my processor at least close to 4 GHz.

Rest of specs:
GTX 580 Classified Edition
8 GB DDR3 RAM
GA-990FXA-UD3 Motherboard

A water cooling system would be great. I got 4.0Ghz easily on mine with one and it stayed below 45C. I would look into an H80i or H100i

Wasn't sure which case I had but I looked it up and I think it's this one: http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=722&fid=4

Do you think this would work with water cooling and if it does will it work with the ones you listed?

Hey man I had a similar rig. I'm somewhat surprised you are getting that much lag. I had one running at 3.8 ghz for a while and then I pumped it up to 4 ghz and things were pretty smooth.

I just upgraded to a 2600k because planetside 2 and skyrim really like it (smoothness)

I'm not sure why I get so much lag but I've tried so many different things to try and fix it. At this point I just have to assume it's the cpu. This is the first PC I've tried gaming with and I initially thought that if your system exceed the recommended specs it would at least run smoothly at medium settings.

You need to be a little more specific. What games are you experiencing lag in. Is this lag something along the lines of a dip in frames (sudden choppiness) or is it more of games recognizing input too slowly (mouse delay) or is it constantly choppy?

Does this happen in every game or just some?

The lag I get is almost always inconsistent. Sometimes i'll have good frames and then as soon as I look in the direction of some character models or AI it lags. It will change in severity with certain games but I will notice it in Far Cry 3 all of the time. Another game is Hitman Absolution, I would get lag in multiple areas of that game. I get tons of lag in Arma 2 which is to be expected. Even Minecraft would drop down to 35 when I would look at the jungles in the default texture pack. I wanted to play skyrim but I would get fps and input lag in it. There are several other games with the same type of inconsistent fps.

What is your current cooling situation?

Far cry 3 seemed to hate my thuban as well. Skyrim is one of those games that hate phenom processors on ultra.

Two final questions.

1. What is your thermaltake power supply (model)?
2. What is your current cooling situation?

I can give you some tips on overclocking when you do decide to make the plunge.

Not sure what model my psu is I'll check tomorrow and update the post. Currently all of the cooling is stock. Any help with overclocking would be greatly appreciated considering I know little about it. I was going to buy the 3770k since I can get it for $230 at micro center but I figured if I overclock for now I can upgrade when the new lineup of Intel processors come out.
I mean the 230 dollar 3770k is a great deal. I would just think that if you are looking into liquid cooling you are going to be looking at 100 dollar plus cooling solution most likely. If you are going to spend that kind of money on cooling you might as well buy the new processor instead.
