In fact, if you aren't using any apple-specific software, you are better off with a windows system these days. Why? Because for the cost of a mac, you can build a significantly more powerful windows pc. You lose a tiny bit of efficiency on the windows platform, but the more powerful hardware more than makes up for it.

It's a simple fact. Prove me wrong.

The best question is why would anyone prove anything to you? What makes you special?

=====================================================================

Creative software costs more than the machine it self, if your stuff is Windows run that, if your stuff is OSX run that..If it's for work then it's a tool nothing more or less. All my expensive software is OSX thats why I have mac's and hack's. Take your complete workflow into consideration, are you faster in Final Cut than Avid if you are whats the dollar value of that? If you're running cross platform software, do you prefer Apple support, Dell/HP support or are you willing to be the support. As you move forward in your career what is the industry using?

There is nothing in my life that requires Windows so there is no Windows in my life.

I wouldn't tie myself to Apple in 2013, they've not given any clear guidance or direction. If you can stay cross platform, do that.

Resistance to change is the furthest from the truth. Other than mobile technology, the post production industry is one of the fastest growing and changing. New software, new codecs, new hardware, new gear, new resolutions, etc all change every year, so change isn't the problem. It's a workflow issue. The OS X post workflow works much better than the same on Windows, and that's because Apple tries to make things EASY. On a somewhat related note, Microsoft pretty much killed their chances of stealing the media market from Apple with Windows 8.

As for being relevant 15 years ago, no. Neither Adobe nor FCP were PPC programs. Editors worked on AVID machines that cost around $40,000. They didn't use computers. Even after that, they used AMC 1-2.5/3 on Windows computers. It wasn't until the late 90's- early 2000's that Apple really started taking the marketshare for media. Before that, everyone used AVID on a PC. FCP caused the switch from Windows to Mac. The usability, better codec support and easier workflow is what allowed Apple to maintain that market.

3D houses will continue to use Windows and post houses will continue to use Macs. Don't lead the OP in the wrong direction just because you think Apple is overpriced. FACT IS, OS X is what the industry uses, so if he's going to be serious about editing, why would he get the opposite of what the post industry favors?

Exactly what year do you think it was 15 years ago? Right. I'm sorry, I just can't take someone seriously when they are so completely indoctrinated into a narrow mindset that they can't see the truth sitting right in front of them.

The only thing you've said that has any validity is that OSX is the current industry standard.

15 years ago....carry the 1....divide by 3.....multiply the 11 by the coefficient.....thats what like 2009 right? wait no! that's 2010. I forgot to subtract the lowest common denominator.

indoctrinated? no. working in the industry? yes.

Industry standard ? OSX ? 3D ??? biggrin.gif LOL

What is all this nonsense,....

The "real standards" rely on sole specific solutions (Scenarist BD which is native to windows, and Avid MC which is native to OSX)
both unified by "blackmagic" components.

no need to prove anyone right nor wrong, just call-up any major studio, request a "post-production tour" and see for yourself .... thumb.gif

Real studios rely on BOTH platforms just as much (from the WB studio in burbank, to NBC/Universal in studio city)

Is only the "amateurs" who tend to chose a side rolleyes.gif

AMC is cross platform. And I've been to post houses before. Hell, my professor owns one. Scenarist is for BR finalizing. That's distribution, not post production. The OP was asking about editing. Yes finalizing is done mostly on Windows, but EDITING is done almost exclusively in OS X. Hence why I said Mac>Windows if you're making a career out of it.

Whatever system your software runs on is what you should use. If both, then run Windows due to reasons stated about more powerful hardware for the money and future upgrade-ability.

The reason OSX is believed to be "the standard" for video editing is because everyone and their mother believes that Final Cut Pro is the best NLE out there. Adobe, Avid, and Sony have a bone to pick with that claim.

Honestly, I would rather shove thumbtacks into my eyes and play freeze tag on a highway before I used Final Cut ever again.

Again, FCP has never been the reason for Mac being the standard in the market. Avid has always been the most used in a professional environment. Pro Res and ease of use are the reason Macs are used more than Windows in post. It has nothing to do with FCP. It never had anything to do with FCP.

On an unrelated note, Adobe is gonna lose more of the market now with the discontinuation of CS and the start of subscription based CC.

Whether or not Macs will continue to hold the market will rely more on whether or not Apple updates the Mac Pro. If they don't, Windows may have a chance. If they do, Apple will likely keep control over the market.

And Apple's domination of the post market started when they were PPC and Windows expressed no interest in creating features for that market.

To everyone else that's gonna mention FCP, don't. That's an uneducated assumption. Wedding houses and a handful of sitcoms useD (notice the past tense) FCP before x64 was as common as it is today. Avid MC and Adobe have become much more popular than FCP. Lose that mentality. It's wrong and it's closed minded. FCP is dead. Don't believe me? Look up some reviews of FCPX. Still not convinced? Download the trial and see for yourself. FCP is done.

AE and PR from adobe are about the same across platforms but with Windows you can always expand your hardware (quicker) to support GPU tie ins for accelerated editing and production, I miss my mac but not enough to recommend it as a work horse
