Windows XP logging on problem...

Thread Starter
Does anyone else have a problem when they log on to windows XP and you get a blank desktop...(ie, no icons, no start menu). Have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager and then log off and try again..

IS it/Could it be related to O'cing? I have run all the necessary stress tests with no errors, so I assume my PC is stable....

Any ideas?

Run a spyware scan and an Anti-virus scan. What programs are you using to do these?

Reset the overclock and see if it persists. I have seen an unstable overclock cause explorer.exe to crash which is what controls the start menu etc.

Or if none of these work you could perform a windows repair or a fresh format.

This can happen alot when you have Un-needed processes or applications running on startup. If you left it for a long time you would logon fine however your startup is pretty slow thats all.

Look to my Windows Faqs in my sig and they may help you...But also check for Virus infections and Spyware alike.

My PC starts up pretty quick though...quite quick actually.

I only get around four scans across the Windows XP startup bar thingy when I turn it on...

Chances are its just not a clean install. My system was doing that, so I just went in and reformatted and finished it up.

I've had that. I wouldn't worry about it, as when I restarted, it logged on fine. I actually got that when starting windows XP for the first time right after install!! Try getting rid of some programs that are set to start when you log in.

I've looked at that, but there aren't any programs that I can get rid of at startup. There are very few programs that startup apart from the required ones for windows etc..

I know it works with a restart...but it will probably do it once or twice a week...particularly when I switch between users!
