Need Help Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2011 from HDD RAID1 to SSD RAID1... (WD RE4 2TB --> Samsung 840 Pro 512GB)

Thread Starter
I currently am running my company on a Windows SBS 2011 Standard and I am trying to migrate from my current WD RE4 2TB HDD RAID1 array to my new Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD RAID1 array. I have tried using Samsungs data migration software along with Intel (acronis) data migration and norton ghost. Samsung keeps obtaining a defragmenting error and Intel and Norton both don't support the OS.

Does any know of a good server data migration software that will allow me to transfer my OS to smaller SSDs? The OS is currently only 220GB in capacity and has plenty of room to fit on the 840 Pros. I can reset the disks to non-raid if needed to go from a single drive to a single drive.

Please only recommend software if you know that it supports most server OS or have personal experience with it.

And I do NOT have the option to do a fresh install...

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

clonezilla?
I think you need to do a fresh install to figure out if the cloning is failing due to the cloning software, or due to a compatibility issue between the SSD and motherboard.

Doesn't have to be the same OS - you just need to install something (even an unactivated Win7 install) to verify you reach the desktop without any oddities.

EaseUS Todo Backup Free is the software that I'd choose for cloning, but I don't know if it supports that version of Windows.

http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

If you have a second computer with the same chipset, you could plug all four drives into that one and use EaseUS Free to clone from Win7/Win8.

Failing that... PartedMagic or some other tool should be able to copy partitions over while resizing them - although I'm not sure if it'll copy the MBR.

Clonezilla will not allow me to go from a large partition to a smaller partition.

I need a data migration software specific for server OS. I'd rather not use a free cloning software. I would rather do a data migration with a good software even if it costs some.

There is only 220GB taken up by the OS but Clonezilla will not allow me to clone from a 2tb drive to a 512GB drive. I tried to shrink the volume but it will only shrink to 1.2TB.

I need a server migration software that support migrating servers to smaller SSDs.

Thanks for the help.

why not shrink the OS partition?

if you can use easeus todo backup it should have no issue if compatible with your OS.

Okay. Here you go:
http://www.todo-backup.com/business/server-backup/download.htm

EaseUS makes the most capable cloning and backup software for Windows that I know of.

I will look into this EaseUS software. I appreciate the help.

This does support going to a smaller drive correct? Also, I just want to make sure that we are not talking about migrating windows images right?

Thanks again for the help.

EDIT: I was also looking at this software... what do you think? Have you ever heard of this?

How much space are you using? What software didi you use to shrink the partition? If it is less than the 1.2TB and you could only shrink to 1.2TB then you need to use something other than the windows snapin manager. If data is across a large area of the drive/drives then it will not move any data when shrinking the volume. Thus you will not be allowed to go smaller without a defrag. Easus partition master will allow you to shrink the partition to about the same capacity as used as it can move data around when shrinking.

Yep. I just cloned from a 750GB to a 500GB drive, no problem.

It should be able to clone whatever you want it to clone. Just look into it - it's very capable software.

I don't know. Paragon software used to be the go-to software for a lot of stuff, similar to Acronis for cloning. Then they fell from glory with a few crappy releases. (Both companies) They may have an excellent product now, but I haven't looked into their software in years.

Are both of you referring to a server operating system or just consumer windows? I spoke with someone from microsoft and they told me to put in the installtion disc and do a full restore to the new ssd but from what I am reading in the administrators companion book for sbs 2011 it says that you cannot restore to a smaller drive than the one the OS was installed on. I am attempting to try this now. Please let me know if you have used EaseUS for migrating any server operating systems bc server OS can have different types of system files that prevent a lot of ordinary data migration programs from working properly.

Thank you again for all the help.
