System locking up/freezing. Almost certain it's my motherboard, but help would be appreciated.

I've lived with this problem for around 5 months now, and felt like I should finally address it since it's beginning to become a real pain.

My system specs are:
i7-3930k
ASRock Extreme 9
Sapphire 7970
Crucial M4 128GB
16GB Corsair Vengeance (4x4GB)
Corsair AX850

I've returned everything to stock speeds to ensure it wasn't my OC that was causing the problems. CPU and GPU are under water.

So, after I built this system, two weeks in or so, I started to notice the system randomly freezing. What would happen exactly is everything on-screen, including the mouse, is frozen. Keyboard buttons aren't recognized (I mean the numpad, caps lock, etc don't change the lights on the keyboard), and if I was watching a video or listening to music, you would hear the last notes being stretched over and over again. The only way to stop this is to either hold down the power button or press my restart button on my case.

The freezing would never happen while I am gaming full screen, or windowed. It happens while I browse the web, but it seems to happen more often when I am watching a youtube video/watching a video on VLC.

In terms of diagnosing it, I have tried switching out my 7970 with another 7970. The problem still persisted. (The way I did it was, since my card was in a loop and I did not want to take it apart, I left the card in the PCI-E slot, but did not provide any PCI-E power cables to it. I then plugged the 7970 (brand new, friend just bought it) into a PCI-E slot available under my existing one.)

After that, I ran memtest to check my ram. No errors. I also used my setup while removing a single ram stick each time, but everytime the problem was still there.

I have also done a full reformat of Windows, again, no luck.

Although, I do have two HDDs connected, a 1TB backup and a 3TB storage. These two were used in my previous setup before I built a rig using X79, and I have not had these problems. (Could these be causing the problems though?)

That's as far as I have gone in terms of trying to figuring out what's causing it.

Before I send my motherboard off for an RMA, is there anything else someone can suggest to try doing? I have also looked around and have found that some other people (albeit, 2-4 people) posted that they have similar problems while using the Extreme9 board. Could it be a coincident that they were just using the same board? Who knows.

Thank you.

The PCIE lane will still power the GPU so that might not have been the best way to test for that. Have you tried running anything like 3DMark or Prime95 just to ensure system stability?

If it's a common problem with the Extreme9 then maybe try a BIOS update before you send it away?

That's what I thought about the GPU, but since the system didn't recognize it/didn't show up anywhere I assumed it was being ignored. I have tried 3DMark and Prime95. Both were fine. It never seems to lock when the system is under stress, just.. while i'm using my pc moderately (again, browsing web, typing in microsoft word, or just watching videos)

It's been updated to the latest, and I'm not sure if it's a common problem. I found the posts on different forums after going through multiple google pages. A few of them also fixed their problem (tried doing what they did, but it didnt help).

Have you solved the problem of freezes? My brother has the same problem on a P67 Pro3, we've tried everything and we can only handle the RMA for motherboard.

Greetings
