New to Smartphones, loooking to upgrade

Thread Starter
I could use some help deciding which smartphone to get since I don't know much of anything about them. I'm not a heavy phone user, so I'm definitely looking at the ones that won't cost me much of anything when I upgrade. Here's the phones that I can basically get for free:

HTC Vivid
LG Nitro HD
Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate
Samsung Focus 2
Nokia Lumia 900

I don't really know what to look for as far as the specs go, so any help would be appreciated as far as which of these are the best and what to look for in general.

don't get the free ones, while most of them are still good phones most them are also no longer supported meaning they most like do NOT have the latest version of android so you are buying yourself a brand new device that is already outdated and won't be updated by manufactor

Look at
the phones that cost $50-$100 - it'll be more worth it. Android 4.0 is leaps and bounds better than some of those that don't have it.

http://wireless.amazon.com/ Galaxy S3 on Sprint/VZW is ~$60. AT&T is ~$80
... of course if OP can wait a bit longer. Just wait for a deal on Amazon Wireless, they had A LOT OF deals during Black Friday time for phones at a price of $0.01 for new customers (Galaxy S3 included).

Phones I would keep a eye out for (in no particular order),
- LG Nexus 4 (GSM Unlocked ~$299-$349... $199 on contract.. probably not in your budget but the latest in Nexus genre... supported by Google)
- Samsung Galaxy Nexus (older generation but still a very good phone. updates come from google and is eligible for 4.2.1. available on TMo/AT&T/Sprint/VZW... you can get it pretty cheap nowadays)
- Samsung Galaxy S3 (one of the most popular devices at the moment. not on 4.2.X unless you custom ROM etc.. available on TMo/AT&T/Sprint/VZW)
- Samsung Galaxy Note II (probably won't fit your budget but if you wanted to go all out... this would be the phone.. same availability)
- HTC One X+

I don't follow Windows Phone so if that's your thing, I can't help... iOS? nawwww smile.gif

~$80 for S3 on AT&T....... if you 're looking for a budget, that's probably the best we can do. Either that or find a better deal.
But at least go for a highend Android device. At least dual-core, Android 4.1.X+ (jelly bean project butter so good), 1GB ram+)

The Samsung Galaxy S3 on Amazon Wireless shows it uses Android 4.0 (ICS), so since you were saying it has 4.1, I assume that means it is upgradable? If that is the case, how do I tell which phones can upgrade the OS and which can't?

Sorry if these are noob questions, I really only started reading up on smartphones a day ago.biggrin.gif

Unfortunately if they don't say so in the advertising (the usually do) then you'll have to look them up to see if they can. Or if they aren't upgradable.

What is upgradable and what isn't is the largest problem facing android, fragmentation. Just because a manufactures says they will upgrade it doesn't mean they actually well. Pick out a phone and check to see if any software upgrades has always been released for it. The latest android is 4.2 with the next one not far behind. No one can say for certain that the SGS3 will ever get 4.2 or the one after that and even if the SGS3 gets it doesn't mean all versions of the sgs3 will get it. Samsung is one of the few manufactures who actually upgrade their high end devices with the source code. LG and Motorla both back tracked in the last few years on devices they promised to upgrade. HTC usually pushes out upgrades, even if it is bugged.

My suggestion, if going with a top of line android, either go with a nexus or sgs3 or note2. I haven't seen anything else I would even consider with the cloest one being the LG Optimus G and HTC One are the next closet runner ups but they are far cry from the ones I listed. All those devices have been upgraded to 4.1 but the only one promising 4.2 is the nexus. Samsung is doing some neat upgrades for their devices that are unrelated to what google is doing with android that find both fun to use and useful for getting more things done.

Edit:

Since your not a heavy user I would upgrade to a good device, sell it and buy a nexus. At the end of the day you'll have a great phone a little more money in your pocket than you started with.
