why some games have no regenerate health? - Page 4

I totally agree. Heath-packs and health regen are equally unbearable to me. I've only ever enjoyed FPS games that contained neither. The player should fear taking damage and be punished for dying IMHO. It really gets the adrenaline pumping and makes you emotionally invested in the game. An FPS where I can hide behind a bush and regenerate health or pick up a magic box and recover from a gunshot wound is just silly. Counter-strike had it right back in the day (1.5ish). 3-5 shots from basically anything and you were dead with or without body armor. That was the last FPS I ever really liked. The more modern health mechanics are fine for silly arcade games like Halo, but just sad to see in something like COD. Pretty though...

As far as realism goes neither regenerating health or health packs is very realistic but remember games aren't suppose to be realistic, and in my opinion I rarely base a game around how I replenish my health (although I do prefer magic healing spells the best)...

Also the potions, healing overtime and healers always works well for me in WoW!
I wouldn't say regenerative health is better then a healthpack system. Just because it's a newer thing games have been doing doesn't make it better... it does make it easier though.

Having your health not regenerate gives you more depth IMO. With health regeneration, you are either dead or not after a fight. If your health doesn't regen, you can be 75% dead or 25% dead after a fight, and being low can make that next fight even more interesting. It also gives you incentive to avoid fire entirely, as opposed to just ducking behind cover often enough.

Games without regen require more thinking about where you are shooting from or more accurate shooting to take out the enemies.

I couldn't agree more which is why I hate modern day online FPS games. Kids these days will never know what what a true FPS game is.

Nothing better than going on a killing spree in TF2 or CS1.6 with only 13 health left to get the adrenaline going biggrin.gif

TBH, realism shouldn't be an argument.

I'm no fan of auto-regeneration (although I like the medkit system). I prefer games to not include such a feature, or at least limit it to lower difficulties. It ruins gameplay IMO. With health not being much of a concern, you might as well just run into combat firing bullets non-stop at the enemies. The gameplay becomes rather linear and repetitive.

However, the game itself can also be an issue. If games don't implement gameplay where you can choose your approach towards different situations, it doesn't matter whether there is or isn't health regeneration; gameplay remains the same either way.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to the game itself (imagine playing the Bioshock, Fallout, or Half Life series with auto-regeneration; it would destroy the purpose of scavenging and looting for supplies).

ps. Also the aim button does even bring the gun to the iron sight, just zoom in a tiny bit.

Have you played Half-Life or Half-Life 2? No regen, and no iron sights. Welcome to the past. Enjoy. thumb.gif

I mean when it takes 3 shots to the head to kill a person and just 5-8 ANYWHERE to kill you then things seem a little off. Nothing was more shocking than emptying a whole magazine into the face of a commi (and actually hitting him) and yet not killing him.

Play on Hardcore or Ranger Easy (or Ranger Hardcore) if you don't want enemies to be bullet sponges. The first Crysis was this way as well, playing on Delta was easier than playing on Easy.

I don't think anyone would be happy with a game where a shot to the arm had a 25-50% of killing you in a few minutes as you bleed out. Likewise they'd be upset if it took just a single shot with any weapon to kill you near instantly after an chest/upper-chest hit. And what about having to stitch/staple up wounds? This all distracts from the focus of the game which is to shoot your friends in a virtual world.

No. The objective is to not die first. a subtle difference, but important. One involves thought, the other doesn't.

Agreed. I died a little inside when I played my first FPS with regenerating health. Everybody is all hyped up over the recent "Survival" games of every variety. FPS's were the first popular survival games besides the quality roguelikes, until ADHD ruined them. The only way to get that golden K/D ratio that kids are so obsessed with in those games is to be truly skilled, and learn your enemies tactics. You don't need to learn jack about how the opponent plays in today's games, you just run around and hope to catch them from behind.

I played the first F.E.A.R last month & there are sufficient health packs lying around throughout the game.
I don't really mind if there is no regenerative health unless the game is very difficult like the original Far Cry or like Project IGI - no check points in the entire mission.
