I am not overlooking the negative side of things, but after all is said and done the game is fun.

And the majority of the people in those servers are hackers, so yeah, fun. rolleyes.gif

As odd as it seems i still want to play this game. I bought arma 2 for the dayz mod a lot of my friends were playing it. But its just a clunky game worst interface ever even for a mod.

Another thing too, you notice how the letter didn't include any "fixes" to anything that actually mattered to the game? Like hacking, missing features or anything else that's wrong with the game.

They want to fix their community problems first, sounds like a cover for all the crap reviews they been getting.

The majority aren't hackers. Have you even played the game? Most people in servers haven't reach Bandit status. rolleyes.gif

Damage control, all that is, was considering getting war z but nah

I think he is doing a song and dance to try and save the game. I don't think he means any of it. I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt but then I read this:

If we had a larger team and more funding we may have done things differently, but I'm not sure. I don't think it was a mistake because our numbers have been strong since day one and, even with the recent negativity, our metrics are really solid and we've been continuing to grow.

So in an earlier paragraph he says that metrics are not the only thing that matter and that he should have addressed people's issues but then here he says that the release was justified because, hey, look at the metrics! Then he says that people are being vocal about small issues, showing he still does not take people's complaint's seriously.

Too little too late.

I genuinely dislike this entire email. There's a few things that he admits, but plays off as trivial.

As for the cash grap/ripoff idea:
Quote:
Did we rush to get it done? That is a tough question, but to answer honestly I think that we all pushed very hard to be first to market and in time for the holidays.
Did you rush is not a tough question in software development. You've got two options:
You completed what you wanted to complete with a bug level you're comfortable with= No, you did not rush it.
You cut content, skipped bug testing/fixing, and didn't finish what you intended = Yes, you rushed it.

Instead, his answer was effectively "yes, but..." to a cut and dry question. When building a software product, you've got 3 categories for features: required, intended, and reach goals. Required is simply the bare minimum you can deliver to have a functioning product, once all these features are in place is usually the transition from alpha to beta. Intended are the features that your team feels complete the product and while they can be dropped to meet deadlines, you're not delivering the product you intended to. Reach goals are the features that expand your product, often delivered after launch if there is continued funding, and sometimes delivered for launch by teams that finished their required/intended jobs and are unable to further assist other teams or make worthwhile bug progress.

Everything that Titov has said points to him putting significant portions of what most developers would consider required features into the "intended' category and then readily launching as soon as the most base requirements were met. Yes, he tries to convolute the situation by using "foundation release", but the simple reality is what he is calling "foundation" is what the rest of the gaming industry calls "beta". There's no shame in releasing a beta where you can gain entry by paying for the final game, plenty have done it, even on Steam (Endless Space is the first game that comes to mind, very underrated game). Anyone with any respect for their consumers would find shame in misleading their customers by throwing up a smokescreen to disguise the fact you're still in beta.

However, Titov now finds himself in a Catch 22. His game has far too much controversy around it for him to be able to pull the plug without going to jail, but continuing development will cost much of what the game has made while the controversy severely impacts future sales. However, the game's life was likely never planned for more than a month or two after launch and the game's engine severely limits what they can do from here. He's stuck sitting on a time bomb with a firing squad waiting for him to try to move. It appears Day Z will miss its 2012 standalone launch, and if the standalone doesn't launch by the end of February and divert all eyes, Titov will be in a very bad position.
