Is it Common to Combine Phase Change and Water Cooling?

I've been looking, but haven't found an example of it yet. I've been thinking about making a phase change build for a while now, but the final result isn't "hands off" enough for me. This all led me to desire a water cooling loop that can be either chilled with a phase change system, or work independently of it. I'd figured someone would have done this already but I haven't seen it, and I'm wondering why.

I don't imagine it would be too difficult. I had something in mind where instead of using a conventional evaporator to be used over the socket, you use a reservoir as an evaporator and cool your entire loop that way. From there you could install a radiator and have your fans stay off until temps rise to a certain level; this way your system can stay cooled by conventional water cooling when you don't feel like running your phase change unit. Switching would be effortless, and you'd be able to cool your entire system with the phase unit without the challenges that come with it -- using phase change for quad SLI/Crossfire seems much more reasonable this way. Naturally you'd need to use coolant that won't freeze or become too viscous at lower temperatures, but this seems like a good solution overall.

Unless there's some serious flaw that I'm overlooking here, I'm sure someone's done this already. If any of you guys have seen someone do/attempt this I'd be interested in seeing it. Other than that, I'd be interested in your ideas. I've got the funds secured so I might just make this happen for my Haswell build.

the common thing that pushes people away from chilled liquid cooling is always the insulation process. It's not overly hard but users find it's a challenge

Though I don't really see why a phase change cooled liquidcooling loop would be lower maintenance than a "direct to die" SS setup. With a chilled loop you have more parts to deal with, it'll most likely take more space etc. The good thing of course is the ability to cool all the components you want.
