RAID 0 worth $240?

Thread Starter
How much of a performance improvement can I expect if I get another WD Raptor?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012

Also, would using the ASUS EzRAID on my motherboard cost me in performance over using the RAID chip on the motherboard?

Also, this is my understanding of RAID 0 and RAID 1, so please correct me if I'm wrong:
RAID 0 = twice the time to write to the HDDs, half the time to load, half the chance of an error
RAID 1 = half the time to write to the HDDs, half the time to load, twice the chance of an error

Most importantly, is any performance gain going to be worth the $240 it will cost to be shipped to my doorstep?

raid 1 = backup, twice to write and read, not sure about error but if one HD screws up, the other is fine with all the data

raid 0 = half read time, not sure about write, if one HD screws up, its all lost.

I had RAID 0 and RAID 1 reversed apparently. There are multiple HDDs to read the same data from, so how can the RAID 1 configuration take twice as long? I think you are mistaken there...

Yeah, that's correct, I switched the two numbers by accident. But there is reduced read time in a RAID 1 configuration. I am not sure about RAID 0...

What about my performance question? Is it worth it?

RAID 0 is really worth it. I used to not have a RAID, but now that I do, I won't turn back, well, probably not.

Below are my benchmarks. Both are SATA150, because I don't have SATA 3 GBPS, yet

The first one is a Maxtor 300 GB, 16 MB cache.

The second one is my RAID 0. 2x 7200.10 250 GB 16 MB Cache (Perp Drive)

BTW, the 7200.10s are nice. Although slower than the Raptors, you get a much better deal. More space, and increased speed (compared to other 7200 RPM drives). That is all IMO.

Raid 0 reads and writes data between 2 drives. in theory it should be 2x as fast as 1 drive. 2x the risk though, as if one drive dies, the data on BOTH becomes USELESS.

Raid 1 mirrors the data onto both drives. This is basically the same as reading and writing to 1 drive in terms of speed, but there are 2 disks doing it at the same time, so you have a backup. This is massively safer than using just 1 drive, as if one fails, you have ALL the data on the other. the cnahce of BOTH drives failing is extremely low.

Here's 2 very useful FAQ's about RAID:

But the read time for RAID 1 is 2x as fast if you use 2 drives, right?

What RAID configuration was that, stevemc?
