help with getting dual channel on msi mpower

Thread Starter
I have 2 sticks of 8gb corsair vengeance ddr3 1600mhz memory, and using an msi z77 mpower mobo. I tried placing memory in the 2 slots where the msi handbook told me to, and my computer couldn't boot up. I can only boot the computer with a single piece of memory, or sticking 2 pieces of memory into the first 2 slots. However I only get single channel memory of 16gb if I do that. I've also tried sticking 2 pieces of memory into every single possible way, but still no dual channel or boot. Can anyone help me with this?

Sounds like RMA criteria for the board if you can memtest86 the sticks in single channel configuration without errors.

Hope it's not.....although I doubt it, rest of the mobo works fine. I can fit my memory sticks into dimm slots 3 and 4, msi's manual tells me to put them in slots 2 and 4 but I can't boot my computer into windows if I do that.....instead I get a message on my monitor saying "no dvi signal" which i clearly have given a dvi signal into my graphics card.

So it will boot with a single module in any dimm slot, or with 2 dimms in single channel?
What does the debug LED show when it doesn't post in dual channel?

Gave me the debug number "55". According to the manual, it's labeled under the status "Early memory initialization". Any idea what this is?

55 is a memory error, means either the memory can't do that frequency/timings with that voltage, or there's an issue with the dimm slots. If the dimm slots all work with a single module, it would be something with the memory itself or the board/bios don't like that kit.

Any chance you have another memory kit around to try just to make sure all is well with the board? You can also try updating the mobo bios, chances are good the board (with current bios) just isn't compatible with that memory kit.

Also, I'm guessing you have tried using XMP & it was a no go, you can also try raising vccsa to about 1.05V, I had to do that to boot 16Gb with 4 x 4Gb modules.

I'll try that, and yes I did xmp (didn't work). Raising dram voltage to 1.55 didn't work either, so it's not lack of power to my memory. Don't have another memory kit, but ill try to update bios although I doubt that it has anything to do with dual channel functionality...

I've never used 8Gb modules so not sure how the mpower works with them, I did have to make some changes going from 2 x 4Gb to 4 x 4gb (needed more vccsa).

It would just be handy to put in a pair of dual channel lower density sticks, just to make sure the board does fine in dual channel. Hard to narrow down if it's the board or the memory, if all the dimm slots work I would think the bios or the memory itself is the issue.

Updated the bios to the latest version, 17.5. Still getting the same error "55". Pretty sure it should work with the corsair vengeance 8x2 set since it's a popular choice among builders, might try returning the 16gb and try using a 4x2 module. Btw, what does vccsa? Can i change it in the bios?

Well......what a bummer. It seems like dimm slots 1 and 2 don't work at all when i place a single memory stick in either one (again, resulting in error code 55). So i'm guessing this is a mobo problem not the memory's?
