Core 2 Duo & 2x 8800GTX's

Thread Starter 
Now i have been seeing a lot of rich folk buying really high end CPU's and Dual 8800GTx's in SLI. Now considering the power of those cards individually are pretty much astronomical in terms of performance let alone SLI (i hate rich folk) performance. Wouldn't even an X6800 be a bottlekneck?

Yes there is a huge bottleneck with any G80 sli setup, even with the processor extremely OCed.

SLI only gains 2,000 3dmark06s without OCing with a x6800.

For dual GTX's Probably. I think a single card is fine for right now, I mean I don't think there is anything that is really gonna be stressing it anytime soon.

I read a review/bench test of the 8800GTX's and they had a quad core Kentsfield and remarked that it was a bottleneck. I'm sure the X6800 would be as well.

Ok thought as much....Although i'm a little confused with the current h/w being released being far too powerful for anything to utilise it properly. I mean an E6600 and 8800GTX would be way more than is really neccessary for current and forthcoming titles (Crysis maybe an exception).

With my modest sig below it handles anything and everything and i shall be getting a 2nd 7900GT soon. Basically what i'm trying to say is......

Is hardware getting too far ahead of software development?

Yes, for right now, But the reason for the G80 series cards is for DX10 which is the next software advantage for gaming. Its gonna push the cards more then with DX9.

2007 is going to be a big year of change. Windows Vista is going to need a strong system to operate at XP speed. I'm guessing that it's about the same speed difference there is between XP and Windows 98. The hardware is trying to catch up right now in my opinion with Windows Vista. As always, they will be working on the bottlenecks but there is still more new stuff to come (DDR3 with higher capacity, AMD quads, etc. ect.). I can't wait to see what Doom4 looks like with DX-10!

I know if I were rich, I would always have the best there is too.

I think that with the release of DirectX ten, we will see the ease of some of the CPU bottlenecks that we are currently experiencing. There are a lot of wasted operations made with current directX 9 technology that could be put to good use elsewhere.

If you look up on the DirectX 10 architecture (and SM 4.0), they have really tried to take the programmable logic of graphics cards to the next level, and streamline operations made to the GPU (without having to send op's to other sub-systems like the CPU):

Actually I think Oblivion is a little choppy near the gates with only one 8800GTX. Of course two of them pwn it but oh well.
