worth a small upgrade?

Thread Starter
My in-laws have a compaq sr5633wm and Im trying to speed it up for them without spending a ton of cash. Specs here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01535270&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3794721#N79

It has a pentium dual core E2200 1.8 ghz and 2 gig ram. I did a clean install of Windows 7 64bit today as a Christmas presant (up from vista 32 bit) and was wondering if it was worth it to spend $100 on it and throw in another 2 gigs of ram and a core 2 duo E7500? The clean install of win 7 made a huge differance but it still seems too slow, lol, of course anything will be slow to me compared to my main rig (aside from sb-e)

So would the e7500 and 2 more gigs of ram make a noticable differance in performance or should I tell them to run it till it dies and have me build them a full pc when they have more cash? They mainly use it for browsing, editing pictures for ebay and light gaming (nothing crazy, mostly older COD games and kongreate arcade), but it bogs right down when you try to multi-task. Im thinking lack of ram is the biggest problem, but a faster processor never hurts either, lol

Thank you for any help

Extra 2GB of RAM would help, you can find used 2x1GB or just 2GB sticks for ~$10.

An E2200 should be fine for the tasks listed, I run an overclocked E1200 in my HTPC, and it's plenty for those tasks. I'd try disabling some things in Windows, the flashy junk that isn't overly necessary.

The specs on it show it will support a e7xxx series processor, but if you think the e2200 processor is good enough then I'll have them stick with that and build them a i5 rig in a year or so. I never had any of the 1st gen intel dual core.. I went from a Pentium 4 to a core 2 duo e8xxx, to an i5 2500k and now a 3770k, so I skipped the 1st gen dual core processors

It only has 2 ram slots so I'll throw in 2x2gb sticks and hopefully thats all it needs. I thought about a small ssd, but I know them enough to know they would end up putting everything on the ssd and not the hdd and end up filling the SSD up in no time.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll keep you updated on how they make out. Rep to all

Just wanted to give you an update on this. I held off on doing any type of upgrade to this computer and I'm glad I did because the motherboard failed. Lucky for them, though, their Uncle's pc had a hardrive failure, and he doesnt want to fix it. So hes giving it to them and I'll put their harddrive in it and a fresh install of Windows 7 and they will be good to go. Its a few year old compaq with a 3 gig quad core amd processor (phoenom x4 9650) and 8 gigs of ram so it will be a decent step up from their old pc.
