4gb enough - Page 2

Echo xd_1771 +1

4GB is more than enough for simple gaming and even perhaps overkill for everyday work, but given the cheap price nowadays, it's a great amount to have.

If you're more into gaming, or BF3 as mentioned, the step up to 8GB made a big difference to me, even though its older DDR2 1066 ram. I can switch out to other apps while BF3 is in the background much faster without paging anything to hard drives. When I was running 4GB, it used to take almost a minute to switch to my browser, now with 8GB it is almost instantaneous. Running BF3 and all my work apps, I almost hit 6GB. The only time I have maxed out my ram usage is when running 3 VMs at the same time.

Remember unused ram is wasted ram, so getting 16GB and using less than half of it means more than half of it has been wasted. Unless you're doing hardcore encoding or running heaps of intense virtual machines, I doubt you need 16GB. I'd say 8GB is the sweet spot right now for gamers.

There are some good deals on 4GB right now on Newegg. 2x2GB Crucial DDR3-1866, CL 9 (and not 9-10-9 or 9-11-9, straight 9-9-9!) for $19 shipped. Or buy two individual 2GB DIMMs and it's another dollar less at $18 shipped. 1.5V stuff too.
