"Push/Pull" is always worth it in my opinion.

It's about 25% better in cooling in water cooling, and on my non-water cooled systems (with Hyper 212's), adding a 2nd fan to the heat sink dropped my 2500K temps at 4.4GHz by 5C.
I think that it depends on the restriction of yr rad or CPU cooler and also the fan's pressure.
im a big fan. push/pull on my rad. without it id go over safe limits. devil.gif
post #15 of 25
As mentioned, it will help but it won't blow your mind. I think I saw 2-3c drop when I added an extra AP-15 to my H50 for push/pull.

If you have an extra fan and the space, why not?

Probably worth it as long as you're not spending $30+ on each fan. You really want two matching fans too,
I had push/pull with my Hyper 212+ with some of Coolermasters XTraflos. Very nice fans,

Temperature dropped about 3c on an Q9400 as it never got hot to begin with. Was a bit noisier though, and yes taping the sides with some black electrical tape (Will look cleaner then any other color) can reduce temps a fair bit too. Doing both should be netting you anywhere between 6-10c.

Also don't get a molex - 3 pin/4pin adapter. Get a 4-pin PWM splitter, I'm sure you could find something elsewhere if need be and probably cheaper.

Thank you so much Matt, I will definitely hopefully buy another Blademaster fan for it sometime, and in the meantime I will tape that little gap on the top with some tape but I probably can't get to the bottom part without taking out the heatsink which is kind of a pain.

Also, where can I get the little plastic (or metal) clips to attach the fan to the heatsink? I don't know if it came with more than two with the cooler or if I lost them somewhere. Thanks.

Ok - I have been wondering the same thing regarding shroud vs stock - going to try it out now and see if there is a difference - I have a 2nd CM blademaster here so will try push/pull for you as well. be back in half an hour.

EDIT:

Alrighty then

All tests are IBT 10 runs @ High setting. Nothing too crazy.

Test setup: Sig rig (i7 2600K+CM Hyper 212 Evo) @ 4.4GHZ - ambient is approx 29-30°. Internal "system" temp from mobo stayed @ 41° throughout testing.
Fans run at full speed.

1, Single stock fan "Push" - Idle: 43, Max: 76
2, Push/Pull 2x Stock fans - Idle: 43, Max: 75 - let it be noted that whereas the original test had temps hovering 68-69 it was noticeably different with Push pull - 66-67 more commonly seen and it only hit 75 very late in the piece, this points to ambient case temps rising slightly over the stress test.
3, Push/Pull with cardboard (high quality thumb.gif) shroud - Idle: 43, Max: 75.

The cooler isn't able to deal very well with 130watt loads which is why there is a point where it doesn't really matter how much you blow I guess.

Overall.. push/pull = couple degrees shaved off, significantly noisier though. Shroud at full fan speed seems negligible.

Next test - same rig @ 4ghz - fans set @ 1100 rpm.
1, Push - Idle: 43, Max: 68
2, Push/Pull - Idle: 43, Max: 67
Fans @ full speed, approx 1900RPM.
1, Push - Idle: 42, Max: 64
2, Push/Pull - Idle: 42, Max 64.

Let it be noted that the shroud didn't make any noticeable difference, neither did taping off the gaps between fan and heatsink.

Summary - Push is more than adequate with the stock CM fan, the 212 doesn't have a dense fin structure so there are minimal gains to be made by doubling up fans, it certainly isn't going to magically let you run 9GHZ, no matter how noisy it gets.

I am glad rendering uses cuda, I couldn't encode @ 4.8 with just CPU it would probably 'splode.
