Seemingly random restarts out of the blue...

Hey guys, I just started to experience this problem today. I talked to one of my buddies and he said it was likely a power supply issue so I came here first.

The first thing I did was check my temps while playing a game, which cause the previous two restarts. This is the result:

Nothing seemed out of place to me, but a more educated opinion is certainly welcome.

I looked around the house and asked the family if anybody had plugged anything major in lately just in case that was an issue. It's a bit of an older house so I didn't want to rule it out. Nothing has changed though and this hasn't ever been an issue in my room before.

What can I test now and where do I go from here? My signature should be accurate for my current PC.

No BSOD codes?

Do you know how to keep the machine from a reboot so that it displays the stop codes?

This will be a pretty helpful part of us helping you.

F8 boot and disable the automatic restart.

I didn't have any bsods to my knowledge, should I still do this and wait for the next restart?

I recommend it. I find it unlikely its actually " restarting ". It seems to me its crashing, and then booting after failure.

Alright I'll go do that and try to report back in when this happens again.

I my experience, it is usually drivers that cause a random crash with no BSOD during gaming. To rule it out, you could try updating your Nvidia driver, or install one you did not have an issue with if you have recently updated. If it does not work, at least you have ruled it out.

Good Luck!

Come to think of it I haven't updated my nvidia drivers in forever, it never crossed my mind since the card is so dated at this point. I'll go ahead and it get it out of the way to be sure.

I've also got my system in the F8 boot that disables the automatic restart mentioned earlier.

Well it took until just now to get the issue again. I had updated my nvidia drivers and the issue didn't pop up again until today. I'm fairly certain that I had my PC set to not force a restart like mentioned earlier, but the PC went on and forcefully restarted anyways.

This time I was just browsing the web and chatting on some messengers. Nothing notable or stressful.

Nvidia asked me to update my drivers again, so I did, and I got another one of these completely random shutdowns.

I had my windows set to not forcefully restart and it still did it anyways.

If this was a breaker issue in my home, wouldn't my PC not just come right back on?

I can hardly see it as being anything but my power supply at this point, but the issues happen so infrequently that I'm having a really hard time narrowing things down. And I'll be really bummed if this power supply I had so many good things to say about is dying out on me already.

What should I be doing? I considered reinstalling windows, but if this is a driver issue, then it'd probably return when I installed all of my usual stuff.

I can't force this random restart to happen either. It's getting pretty frustrating.

Edit: It happened again without warning. I've got it set to not restart if Windows crashes again just in case.

During this one, the computer did not actually restart, but it just shut down entirely. It wouldn't turn back on until I flicked the switch on the power supply back to off and back to on. Hope this information helps a little.

Indeed it does, it hints towards a short somewhere in your system.... most likely the mobo, take it out and put it back again, check everything on the back of it when you install it, make sure nothing's touching the mobo, check the mobo standoffs too and make sure everything's in order.
