One year ago today, LG unveiled a gorgeous 55-inch OLED television set — just four millimeters thick — and now the company has announced that the TV will ship next month in its home country of South Korea.

While we originally expected to see the television in May for roughly $8,000, or at least globally sometime before the end of 2012, the new reality is that pre-orders will only begin in Korea on January 2nd, the television will begin to ship in February, and the new price is 11 million won, or roughly $10,000 in United States currency.

Needless to say, early adoption isn't cheap. Of course, LG isn't the only firm that promised a 55-inch OLED set by now. Samsung, which actually went so far as to pursue legal action against LG for allegedly stealing OLED technology, also has a 55-inch TV set in development.

Can I be lazy and ask... Are OLED and LED the same thing? Or is OLED a better system?

OLED panel technology is an advanced form of LED.

OLED panel technology is based on AMOLED technology which is used in many Samsung smartphones.

The advantages of OLED display technology over normal LED are:
  • Much better image quality
  • Superior viewing angles
  • Superior color accuracy
  • Superior contrast
  • Superior black levels
  • Better energy efficiency

Most people are buying LED LCD TV's nowadays, however OLED HDTV's will take over in the next few months/years.

Plasma is basically dead with less than 5% market share.

Why is thickness so important? My 37' TV is maybe even more then 10cm and I can't see why should I care about it.

Because thinner panels look better and more premium.

No-one wants a box shaped TV.

The thinner the better in terms of design. That's the trend.

Its not so much about thickness is the fact the screen OLED is not backlit and will reproduce black much better and doesn't have light leakage of the standard cold cathode fluorescent lamps or LED backlights. It has higher contrast level than LCD its much thinner and lighter, it should be as apt to damage as the LCD panel. It just a much better picture. I remember the first Philips LCD in the 90s it sold for $25,000. It will make LCD go the way of Tube TVs.

Yes, the thickness is great when mounting on wall or other stuff, but I would rather save few hundred bucks and gain size while putting it into some kind of cabinet or like i have it now. Really depends where it is going to be placed at.
Thick TV's are indeed cool and feel premium.

Yes agreed. OLED produces much better images and also much higher contrast similar to how contrast works on the Super AMOLED displays of Samsung smartphones.

Super AMOLED displays have infinite contrast ratio which means the deepest and best black levels.
