Sapphire HD 7870 XT based on AMD Tahiti LE chip - Page 32

Hey guys, I just joined overclock.net since I saw much information about...well...everything I searched for on this particular forum. smile.gif
So, I have a question. What do you run your card on? Mine got 68% ASIC, and I set it on 1200 on core and 1600 on memory, and I am trying to find a good voltage for that. I put power limit on +20, and voltage on 1200. It goes through Heaven with no artifacts or crashes, and card barely goes to 60C, never over it, fans going about 60-62% max (logging it). VRM is also ok on 70-80. But playing far cry 3 it sometimes just crashes, not saying drivers crashed, just black screen and says FC3 stopped working. When it was on stock volt and +20 power limit, I noticed few artifacts (like black lines coming out from ground, up to sky and stuff like that), upped the volt, and its all ok, just sometimes doing that stop working thing. biggrin.gif Got any advice?
Its not the temps as I said, I could bump up voltage more, just don't know, is 1225 about as high, or can you go more? Think that is about safe on Tahiti, could be wrong.
Specs are ok, so its not PSU, I will add them to my signature soon enough, but now I will just write them:

i5 3570 @ 4.5 with noctua Nh-d14
Asus P8Z77-V PRO
4x4 Intel extreme masters set on xmp timings 1866
Sapphire 7870XT
Seasonic SS-850AM, 850W
Thermaltake Armor Revo Full tower, with full fan setup (added 1 bot 120mm set it to run full speed, one silent top 140mm, and case got front, top and side 200mm, and back 140mm)
Playing on 1080p.

Also, what option is your Catalyst control center on when you oc with MSI Afterburner? I heard they might conflict, I just select AMD Overdrive but do not even touch settings, everything else I do with Afterburner.

You're a lot more likely to damage your PCB with high voltage than your actual Tahiti chip. Even most models with improved PCB have trouble pushing more than 1.2V to an overclocked Tahiti chip - and the PCBs for the new 7870 XT/LE models are nothing special.

Your black screen issue is certainly coming from an unstable overclock - even if it is not unstable due to temperature alone. You know this for sure because it does not happen at stock speed.

Use GPU-Z to log the temperatures while playing FC3 and see exactly what VRM or on die temperatures it typically hits before crashing. Most boards experience more voltage drop the higher the temperatures get (VRM and GPU) and eventually the voltage drops just low enough that it crashes. The chip isn't getting enough power (for a second) and you get your black screen. Most people get a driver recovered error first - but the black screen is like the next step of instability.

If it's absolutely not temperature related (like you diligently logged temperatures at the time of the crash several times for VRM and GPU core) it's still not a huge surprise - with overclocking many run stable for hours before eventually crashing. It might be very nearly perfectly stable at those settings - but depending on the actual chip and PCB it may never be 100% stable at those speeds.

Edit: A common trick to increase stability at a clock speed that seems almost stable - bump the voltage down or up slightly and see if it still crashes.

Hi,

I have some general questions in relation to my 7870 XT. Hope someone can answer these.

-Is it normal that there's no difference in fan RPM starting at 80% to 100%? I'm using CCC only at the moment.

-Is it normal that when capping FPS in-game it results in quite the drop in GPU temps? (about 10 degrees in my case!) If yes, that's a great way of dropping temps allowing a larger OC for everyone.

-What would be the benefit of getting a 7950/70 over a 7870 XT in a one monitor set-up when 60fps, screen resolution, in-game settings are like I want them. More consistent frame rates / frame times?

Thanks.

What do you mean by no difference? I haven't tried on mine, but there should be at least a little difference, since on mine there is quite a lot of noise difference, probably there is more rpm.
It is normal when you cap fps that temperature drops. If your monitor is only displaying 60fps, there is no need for graphics card to put out 200fps, and of course there is a lot of heat reduced since it does not run on full load.
But, if you cap your fps, and you get that fps, why would you overclock? Your card will get it anyhow and there will be 0 benefit of overclocking. Overclocking is used when your card does not get the fps you want. smile.gif
On last question, it depends. What resolution is your monitor and is it 120hz? On 1080p and 60hz there will be no benefit whatsoever, since all games run at least 60fps on all ultra. Problem is MSAA, if you want that on highest, in games like FC3, you would get performance benefit from better graphic card with more memory bandwidth and all that even on a single monitor. I play on 1080p and when all is on ultra, and draw distance on highest, I get mostly 30 dropping fps when MSAA is x8. But since I see no difference between 2x and 8x, there is no reason for me, since on 2x I get good 60fps.

Thanks for clarifying.

I can't really put the finger on the fan RPM yet. When I fire it up from default to 100% and then go back and forth it's just not right. Maybe you can have a go at it. It's not a real issue though.

Well cool, to me it was the first time I really noticed that temps drop at capping. More like 5 degrees though. Not 10. And you're right, no need in OC when 60fps is all that's needed. Personnally, I just bumped clock speed to 1100mhz with +10 on powerlimit with the idea to get the 925/975 hopping out the way. Results in about 150mhz more than default which might help maintaining 60fps wouldn't you agree?

On the last part, yes I game at 1080p at 60hz and MSAA can go to hell for the moment. If I change my mind I guess a 7950 would fit the bill.

Edit: changed my mind (fast!) smile.gif

my brothers 7870XT seems to be wierd, it has bad tearing, vsync doesnt fix, idles at 501 Mhz, and doesnt overclock to what i set in CCC.
