The technology stated says it's based on a tag system, the discs come with a blank which will be written to upon first use. They could easily make a disc with a rental pretag on it which allows them to be used as a rental but would not allow use of DLC to deter having the discs stolen and sold. The people who don't want to dish out $60 for a new game but really wanted to play it would now just rent it right away instead of waiting for the price to come down.
Now, that is just my opinion on the matter but I for one am against this on console. The whole thing that attracts console gamers is their ability to rent a game or grab their games and go to a buddies house to play games but not have to lug around a computer. Now you could argue it's not that difficult to grab your console and take it with you but why the need to do so if your buddy has the same thing and share the disc?
If your gamertag accounts are cloud-based this whole thing is a non-issue between consoles as you can just take your gamertag with you, would even be fine using a usb thumb drive. Used games is only a console thing now and it will soon change.

What people would do is make their own "rental" tags, then put them on the discs they own, then sell them.

Question #1, what happens when I pay $500 for a PS4 that breaks in 3 months, you tellin me none of my games will work when I buy another one?

- I really don't care if I loose a potentially good game, do you lie sleepless over all the potential lottery wins you could have had?
That potentially good game that the market never saw, given proper funding could have ushered in a new golden age of gaming. An offline RPG is never going to see the sales of a COD or BF game, even though a fair portion of the market loves RPGs and hates MP FPS games. Those targeted markets are what's at stake here, if the profit margins keep falling, they're not going to be continued. Improved DRM (Note that improved does include less-intrusive) and anti-used copy measures are ways that the profit margins can be stabilized in those genres.

Indeed. Problem is used copies and pirates take away ammunition from the people trying to get past those gatekeepers.

4. The game is not "unchanged" things do not exist in spacetime bubbles, all games are judged contiously, Saying that Duke Nukem 3D is the same game now as it was when it was released just doesn't work.
Yes, when you're talking about years. However, after 12-16 months non-MT games are no longer expected to be money makers. If you bought Halo 4 or Skyrim right now, are you really getting a different experience than if you bought it at launch? From this perspective used games devalue at the exact same rate as new copies. It doesn't change anything about my argument.

5. We live in a free market, arbitrary pricedrops are as uncommon as dragons. Arbitrary is the subjective actions of one imposed on others, prices drop because their worth is decrease in relation to other games.
If you walk into gamestop right now, buy any $60 game off the shelf, rip off the plastic wrap, and hand the game back to the cashier as a trade in, they're legally obligated to now sell it as a used game, and they're going to put it up for ~$40-50. You never even opened the box, and yet somehow the game's "worth is decrease in relation to other games" by 20%? It's arbitrary.

6. stop making semi popular games
Remember that part in your #1 where you said " Why would I care either way if my favourite game is someone elses favourite game?", this is why.

7. P's&Q's? I Cant be bothered with that remark, If it's the other way around? I think the game sucks can i get my money back if i send back my copy? RMA? Appreciation is subjective. I don't appreciate Tim Cain, i Paid him and he gave me what i paid for. Sadly this isn't always the case and sadly i can't get a refund for games that plain sucked. But hey what do i know, maybe you're the kinda guy that appreciates the electric company for supplying you with the power you paid for?
I'd much rather pay the electric company for power than pay my bill to someone who didn't actually do anything. If you didn't get what you paid for, lodge a complaint with the BBB, you'd be surprised how much of a reaction that gets behind closed doors. Chances are that the game didn't deliver what the developers wanted and was pushed out the door by the publisher. BBB complaints give developers a platform to stand on against a publisher pushing.

I agree that if they offered game deals like Steam that this wouldn't be so bad. I'd still be aggravated that I had a physical disk that was worth nothing though...

What are you talking about? Most new cross platform games that are on Steam are the same price as the console variant. Sometimes they are $50 instead of $60 but only because it is the PC version and has been like that since before Steam. Older games are discounted on Steam. So are older console games.

There is no logical line of argument that can successfully condemn this POTENTIAL move by Sony while giving the nod to Steam which has already been doing this very thing for a LONG time.

Good luck getting this past the European Commission, Sony. You'll have to disable that feature for the EU smile.gif
