[IGN] New Sony Patent Blocks Second Hand Games - Page 26

I imagine Sony will include this in the PS4 but it will not be enabled until a firmware update sometime well after release. Get people committed to the new console before alienating them via the new tech.

Stop comparing tangible goods to intellectual property. That's already been covered in this thread.

I hate to break it to you, but it's the same thing. Do your research and you will see that there were court cases against MS regarding this. They started the software "licensing". Not only that...what is the differnce between the intellectual property of a game on disc than on a cartridge? Or a design of a car? or music on LP and mp3. You are just a fool! I'm sick of people declaring that they think they know something. From now on back your statements up since you apparently don't know what you are talking about.

You my friend are a farce. I hope you buy one of those PS4s and have a great time buying games that you can't bring to other houses, or lend a friend. Maybe after a bout 6months on the shelves Sony will have a firmware upgrade that wont allow you to play on anyone else's consol either. Man will that be right up your alley...more PS4s and games since you can only play on your own consol. Imagine how good games will be then! I can see it now...Crysis 4 will look as good as Mario bros and you'll buy it for $80. Can't resell it, in fact you can't even borrow your friends to check it out. What would the developers care? Not like you can go buy Crysis 3 used to replace it...nope...Crysis 3 is still $80 too...that sucks.
PC games can't be sold used, but they still decrease in price over time. However you're asserting that without a used games market console games won't decrease in price?

This patent is a stopgap to achieve the same effect as digital downloads that are currently not viable because of currently inconsistent broadband access in the United States. Nothing more, nothing less.

And I've already said this in this thread: from http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm/
If you compare $50 for BF3 to the $50 that Atari Pong cost,
Quote:
$50.00 in 1974 had the same buying power as $244.23 in 2012.
More than $60 for a game is not some crime against humanity.

I agree, but just because something "isn't a crime agains humanity" doesn't mean that the ground work isn't being laid for anti consumer market. The ground work is being laid to elimante the used game market. Look at Sim City 2013. Only save online...so once the servers are shut down, the game is done. So EA is selling a game they still control. They could end it in 6 months and put out 2014. Not so bad, but because you have ZERO replay valu and Zero resale value, I would say this would at least drop the value of the game from $80 to $30....IF it was even agreable to purchase this game on the idea that I don't actually own the game nor do I control the life span of the game. I wouldn't even rent a movie without understanding the rental window...why would I buy a game without knowing the termination date.

The saddest part of all this is that the average consumer is going to take it up the butt on all this. America is the worst place to live when it comes to consumerism. We will deal with rights being infringed in order to be satiated by a video game or a tv series. I guarantee you that more people on this forum know more about the Olson twins than they do about Che Guevara. It's pathetic. So don't tell me it isn't the end of the world or isn't a crime against humanity. Becuase just like sugar that tastes OH SO GOOD, it doesn't hurt....but after a while when you need a root canal or a tooth pulled, you realize the harm that is done.

So eat it up while the industry continues to slip by you, step by step...you don't see it now, but if this goes unchecked, it is going to be really bad!

If we were talking about gasoline or loaves of bread, I might agree. We're not talking about a necessity, we're talking about a luxury. At any time, the wrong move can cause the entire market to collapse. If it gets "really bad", it just means I'm out of a job. It doesn't mean that first world quality of life took a hit.

Your sugar analogy is almost the exact same argument I used against used games/piracy (granted, I used cocaine instead of sugar).

So tell me, what's the difference aside from being tangible and intellectual? What's so special about the intellectual property that it can not be treated the same way? Why can't we resell the intellectual property or the license that we bought? Is there any reason aside from them being greedy and this system is currently in gray area that's why they are getting away with it?

Movies are intellectual property right? What if they implemented some kind of way that prevents "EXTRA VIEWERS" to watch the movie that you bought? ONLY YOU can watch the movie, is that ok with you? I don't think so.

Exactly. AND Just because something is affordable doesn't mean the market structure is legit or beneficial.
I got a better idea...lets apply this to Computer parts. AMD and NVIDIA decide to make cards that you can't resell nor can you place them in another computer. They will come out with new cards every 6 moths for $400-$600 a pop and they will have a life of 1 year as they wont support previous models anymore. Now you have a 1 year old card that needs to be replaced and you can't remove the card to place in an old machine or sell. So do oyu say what ever...at least the prices haven't gone up? No!

Oh and btw...they wont be able to tell you the differnce between tangible and non tangible. They wont be able to give you any logically explanation...1) because there is none. 2.) they haven't even thought about it enough to put together some sort of thesis...they just eat what ever they are fed.
