This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard and will only come back to bite them in the butt if so. Sony profits from the used market as well. I bet this is pressure coming from partners and developers more than anything else.

was going to say this same thing. Especially right now with the Holiday sales. not to mention i don't have to keep track of discs and you can download on any system once you log into your account. Even games that are steam linked like Skyrim are the same. Buy the disc, link it to your account, use disc as a coaster.

I mean i rarely ever buy any semi recent game from steam for more than $10-15 as if you are patient, usually within 6 months you can get it for 50-75% off the normal price. The only people who buy full price on steam are usually the preorders or those that are to impatient to wait and must have it now.

Indeed. Steam prices are in fact often so low it makes one wonder exactly how high the profit margins of the big game developers really is. It isn't like Pong, where you were buying the hardware in addition to the software. Many of these companies have their own development engines that are years old (long enough to make one's money back on their creation), or lease one for relatively cheap. DVDs are a lot cheaper to manufacture than cartridges. They aren't printing in depth rules and lore and placing them in the physical boxes anymore, opting for a streamlined ruleset and the internet for most of the lore and finer points.

Developers have been stripping and skimping for years now, and Steam only underlines that point by charging a fraction of the price for digitally distributed software.

I concur. I was about to say the same thing. Wasnt there the same type of reaction? I guess time will tell but the way Sony is implementing this type of system involving the use of the disc due to the disc ID itself seems "inefficient". If they were going to tie the game to our account, wouldnt it be better to allow us to download the games off the internet or just install the game via the disc with the key provided.

but for steam, wasnt there news or rumor they might allow us to sell or give away our games?

While I don't support it, it's no big surprise. Most PC gamers should already know how it feels lately to buy a game then own it for life essentially ( outside of selling Steam, Origin, or any other account you have which would technically be against the ToS and at your own risk ), it was just a matter of time till consoles got the same basic treatment.
That and if they would automatically link any purchased games to the actual library on the PSN store so that you may download whenever you want as it is linked to your account in the event your disc is damaged or misplaced it wouldn't be as bad. That and they went on sell cheaper as well. ala Steam mode. then i could possibly tollerate this.

Sort of like what they do with the Cross buy for PS3 - Vita. Except any purchase you make via retail makes it availible to you via all methods. Like my Skyrim example above. Once linked to Steam I can either install it via DVD or download from Steam.

It changes the whole reality of the situation. When you go to by a blu ray game you own it. If this comes to pass, you are leasing a license only.

Ok lets recap in case you did not read the article
Quote:
linking individual game discs to a user's account without requiring a network connection meaning any future attempt to use this disc on another user's console won't work.

Steam is totally hardware independent. If your computer goes up in flames you can still use your steam account/games on your next PC. If you want you can install your games on how many PC you like and then access them by signing in to steam. So you can play your games on your friends computer if you want.

So no this is not the same thing as Steam.

No different then Steam or Origin.

Regardless, it's clearly consumers rights being eroded by big business, yet again. I'm sure if this happens it won't make much of a difference. Sheep will still consume.
