Historically, games are actually pretty cheap now compared to when they first came out. As with any market there is going to be ups and downs. Also, game prices on the Playstation can't go up without every other system going up as well. Sony won't purposely overprice it's games when Microsoft can sit on the other side of the room with XBOX360 games being priced cheaper, or even with PC in another corner with it's prices matching that of Microsoft.

If you're not interesting at maxxing current and soon to be released games out with decent framerates then that's a great build. I don't understnd why someone would go through the process of building a PC for gaming and not put the money in to max out settings.

Games are also a lot cheaper to mass produce now that you don't have to physically tie them into hardware like Pong did, or make cartridges with ROM chips on them like Atari did. 2013 notwithstanding, DVDs are dirt cheap. The cheaper the mass production has gotten, the cheaper the game has gotten (adjusted for inflation). Funny that.

My rig is less powerful than that one, yet it can still max out a majority of games at 1920x1080 while still being playable (40 fps average) The only games I can't max out (that I have played) is BF3, Metro 2033 and FC3.

If you do want to max out every game, you will need to spend a bit more money on the GPU, Like $100 more which is still $400 less than what you said, and yours didn't include the cost of a monitor, mouse and keyboard..

It was just a late night quick guestimate of how I thought it would cost. I played with an i5 2500k build with a 7970 today on newegg which came out to 2k with every single piece you would need, monitor included, and that was still with skimping on some things.

How about this then, PCs and consoles are DIFFERENT and should be treated as such and remain that way. Different markets. Different consumers. Different marketing trends... different. You can play games on both... ok... well I can still play board games and resell them. They're all games, what's the difference? rolleyes.gif
Times used to be you could lend/give a PC game to a friend no problem. That's been a good while for ~95% of games though. Killing the used game market is a bad idea and wrong in a LOT of ways, many of which have already been touched on. There's employment to consider, PR, alienating an entire market segment of people... and the whole 'being a d!ck" factor about it. I buy my PC games on sale, play the demo, or wait... i rarely buy on release or at full price ($50-$70), and most people i know or play with are the same.
They may spend $50mil making a AAA game, but make it back in the first month in most cases. "Then why are they asking for more money all the time?"... Because they WANT more money. You think the working class devs doing the real work see the profit. Nope. The businessmen who've convinced themselves they're integral to the games success treat themselves to a healthy bonus. Just like every other corporation. People are overthinking this... it's nothing more than a money grab. As a dev, I would be happy to just have people enjoying my game en masse, with a modest income relevant to the work invested. My game makes $50mil? Great, but I don't need it, or want it. Put it to use other places then padding the pockets of Exec... or just 'disappearing' from the books.

Software is subject to the same protection regardless of the platform that it is installed on. Just because developers havnt done this this whole time doesnt mean that they couldnt have or shouldnt have.

That's where we can agree to disagree. I believe they shouldn't on console, and frankly it's WAY overblown on PC as well and should be rolled back a decade to a simple online registration. All this high-tech, and horrible, DRM hasn't slowed down the 'pirates' at all now has it? It just gives them more justification to keep raising prices on games.
How about consumer protection from invasive and unreasonable sales? It is quite unreasonable to be told you can't even give away something YOU purchased. Resale aside, I can't even give away PC games without giving my whole account away with it. Something wrong there....

Well, when the PS4 comes out I would expect it to be better than the average gaming PC, but we will see what happens. Consoles are crazy things. I mean I'd like to see any PC do what a PS3 can do with only 256MB of system memory and 256MB of VRAM (heck..even give the PC an extra 512MB to account for the OS). Give these game developers some new hardware and even just a gigabyte of memory and I bet they will really beef up the textures and frame rates.
