I think what most people are upset about is the principal. If it happens to consoles it'll most likely end up happening on PCs as well. Imagine how annoying it would be to have another always on DRM tied into every game you buy. No fun.

Well played good sir.

I think it's worth pointing out the paranoia that led to the DMA being created, and how ridiculous it looks now (also, what happens when you erode civil liberties). There was this argument that piracy was rife, it was costing the industry billions in lost sales, and developers were going bust. Except, I don't remember too many developers going bust (except the ones producing crap, lol). It was all scaremongery, and now we're stuffed with a disproportionate law that ruins our ability to enjoy media in a way that was previously legally permitted and regulated under copyright law.

Second-hand game stores have been around since I can remember (back in the NES days!), and their prescence hasn't forced developers out of business. Worth pointing out that apart from CEX, all the shops I've seen are independently owned - something that is quite rare here in the UK, and should be encouraged, not stifled. Whoever pointed out the library point has hit the nail smack on the head. Libraries have been around for hundreds of years, yet people still write books. I know this isn't about rentals, it's about resales, but the same thing applies. Next, we'll see charity shops going under as they're not allowed to sell any stock. Where does this stop unravelling?

I accept that Steam does this now. Crucially though, Steam has a great anti-piracy mechanism, that only allows use of the game on one PC simulataneously. And it has the gift mechanism built into the store. Surely it's not too much to combine them, and allow transfer of one game to another account? This isn't even about resales, as it's not like there would be any money transferring going on. Even if they're still paranoid about the devs going bust, they could limit it so that games under, say, 3 years old cannot be transferred. That way, if someone wants it, and it's relatively new, they'll still have to buy it. Or, they could set it to buy at a discounted rate, so the dev gets some money from the 2nd purchase (argubly this happens already, as the price on Steam decreses over time).

Anyway, the previous paragraph applies to PS4 & next-gen too, as I believe that digital distribution will be the way forward - the cloud just keeps on rolling forward

So what are we all going to do about this beyond quabbling about it here?
Boycott Sony and continue to happily use Steam, apparently.

I'm confused. So now you're saying you DO have a problem with Steam? And by the way, a license to software is completely independent to the medium on which it was purchased, be it disc or download.

You do realize that the vast majority of boxed PC games are simply pre downloaded Steam files and lock to your Steam account when you install it, right?

There is Need For Speed Most Wanted for mobile. It can run at the native res for the iPhone 5 (1136x640) and SGS3 (1280x720) compared to the resolution of 1280x704 for PS3 and 360

Info for NFS Most Wanted resolution on consoles: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-need-for-speed-most-wanted-face-off

You have to look at things like IQ, poly count, shaders, draw distance, frame rate, etc.. Just as the PS3/XBOX gimps these things to run the same games a modern PC runs, these games do too. I'm not sure it looks the same if played from a phone as from a console as a 50" TV. At least a different game might not.

This could be a nuisance of PC owners used to "rolling their own" visual experience; a clearer picture counts as one of the big boons of playing on the format, but racing through Fairhaven produces an image that looks slightly blurred regardless of your set resolution - an improvement over the console releases, but not quite living up to the dream. Even so, the option to raise the pixel count does still make it much easier to spot upcoming cars, road divides and bollards on PC, which can make for a life or death difference during 120MPH races through busy city streets.

I think the big distinction, in most peoples minds, between this and Steam is quite possibly the price. It is very rare to have cheap top-shelf games on consoles. I have never seen them for much off, at least over here, even a long time after release. On the flip side, the prices of PC games seem to fall much more quickly. Not to mention that on Steam there are HUGE sales that can save literally hundreds of dollars. I own over 200 games on steam. If I had tried to buy the same games on console I would likely, with the same money, own less that 20. Simply due to sales and the faster falling base price.

If the fact that Sony are able to make money from more people because of the lower number of second hand sales and as such convince partners to reduce the price of games then this may work out to be not such a bad thing.

Yes, based on your statement of pure 'fact' we are simply wrong that there is a distinction between consoles and PC rolleyes.gif

And i'm not just now saying I have a problem with Steam, I DO have a problem with Steam, Origin, UPlay, et al. The licensing of software to PLAY a game amounts to little more than a glorified lease of the game anymore. It's ridiculous.that we're required to agree to a ToS that makes it impossible to sell what we buy at increasing prices almost yearly. For those who then turn to cracking legitimate games to be classified as pirates on top of that, it's just crazy. "You're not using our software how we wanted you to!"... wahhh, we don't want intrusive and asinine DRM and always-on nonsense to play a single player game. Always-on for a MMO? Sure... of course. Always-on for say.. Diablo 3 single player and quite a few others, including the upcoming new Sim City game... I call shenanigans.

As for the boxed PC games installing on Steam.. I'd always wondering why installing the game prompts Steam to load and install through it. Oh, that's right, I'm actually looking at my screen and am not blind... thumb.gif

Like I said, someone here get a well worded petition going, and i'll be all over it. There appear to be plenty of people here with more time and ability than I to get something like that going. I just don't have the time to dedicate to making something that would be sufficient.
