[IGN] New Sony Patent Blocks Second Hand Games - Page 48

Well, if Sony implements the patent then I will boycott them with my wallet. Typically, half of my game purchases on a console are used games. They have already begun to implement 'online passes' and the like. Madden football comes to mind where you can't just buy the game second hand from Craigslist and play it, you also have to pay for a new license to use it on your console. These companies will not get my money.

I figured the PS3 would be my last console purchase ever (I built mine from two second hand systems that were broke) anyways, with the way the industry is heading. My gaming days may be numbered, overall, unless Steam can get it's Linux version fully functional with almost every game they have. It may be the only thing that keeps me buying new titles in the future. I am getting tired of jumping through hoops to play the games I have legitimately purchased.

This is a gaming company push. They are trying to get rid of used game sales.

It would be crazy for sony to go it alone on this, they will need all the other console makers to sign up too.

You know you can still buy used PC games at quite a few used game resellers... yes? There's still a used PC game rack at a few local places near me. Back when everything PC wasn't locked to you forever after buying it. frown.gif

Used games don't exist on PC anymore, and I think the push is from the game companies who loose a lot of money, and pretty sure they wanna push the sales mostly online.

With the advent of digital distribution, prices for PC games has overall gone down. Perhaps console games will follow suit. I don't see an issue with this, I would love to see gamestop and their used game nonsense go out of business. I see people complain about PC gaming all the time, but I think PC gaming is in a great place right now - you could buy blockbusters during the steam sale for a mere 10-15 dollars. This was unheard of prior to digital distribution - I for one welcome the PS4 and 720 heading towards digital distribution - perhaps some of the benefits PC gamers received will also apply to console gamers in the future.

The initial prices will still be high of course, but prices rapidly depreciate after the initial months of release. Personally, I don't mind the cost - 15 years ago prices for games were the same as they are now; inflation hasn't really followed console or PC games at all. I remember SNES games retailing for 60-70$ years and years ago, and that is roughly what new games cost now. Heck, with the 720 you can use your microsoft points to help pay for most games.

There is used games, but most are either outdated or not AAA titles. But there are a few types of games not locked down to such extremes, but most people here would pass them off as they're usually not the type of games people here like. I still like getting some of the older Myst type games simply because like love games that make you pay attention and think like that ( still have notebooks around with stuff written/drawn in them from every part of the game ). But if you want actual AAA titles, then you're pretty much bound to Steam, Origin, uPlay,e tc.

Well other than those old games.

I think price of PC games is starting to go u, specially for a brand new game. But I gotta love the deals we find on Steam, Amazon, and all those places nowadays for PC games.
