Its either you buy a $600 console, or pay $70/game.. There is no getting out of the costs..

People are greedy.

Again, this is for the best. Single player games are quickly becoming uninviting to develop because of the used games/piracy issues. DRM for consoles fixes this. A PS3/360 copy of Skyrim being passed around to a half dozen friends and then resold to someone else is effectively the same thing as the first person buying the game and the other 6 people pirating it.

Steam is totally hardware independent. If your computer goes up in flames you can still use your steam account/games on your next PC. If you want you can install your games on how many PC you like and then access them by signing in to steam. So you can play your games on your friends computer if you want.
So no this is not the same thing as Steam.
Really? Read the words you didn't include in your bolding:
Quote:
linking individual game discs to a user's account
So long as you connect to the internet at some point after installing the game to your account, you'll be able to play it when you log in on other systems. It's linked to ACCOUNT, not SYSTEM.

So no this is not the same thing as Steam.

Who's to say that it doesn't link to a local playstation account, and when a connection is available sync with a networked account? Sony knows they can't just link to a local account only without some way to backup or provide protection against system failure in the event that a system needs to be replaced.

But it's not your right to freely distribute somebody elses IP. When you bought a game you bought the Cover, the booklet, and the disc. You did not buy the software on the disc. That belongs to the company, always have and always will, at least by their IP rights for the next 70 or 100 or whatever the new length is for ip/copyrights to expire.

Single player games are becoming uninviting because they have a lower profit margin. P2P games make more money and MMOs of all kinds use other humans in place of AI.

It has nothing to do with used games or piracy. It has everything to do with a corporatist attitude towards the bottom line of squeezing the most cash out of consumers for the least amount of work.

Dunno what i think.

I mean on the PC its been like this since 09 really, You cant trade your games in unless you want 50p each, No matter if its the latest release.

On consoles the used game market is kinda what makes it shine.... i think... I dont know, Everyone does not want to pay £40 / $60 per new release thats why myself i wait a month, And bam you can get it for under £30 brand new.

Consoles in all though are ridiculous now though, If you think about it what is next gen gonna bring new to the table? You have tablets that are easier to program than current consoles, And they have graphics as good as the 360 and ps3, Even on current consoles you cant stick a disc and play, Its most likely stick a disc, update game, Install "crucial" data and play.

Whats really silly though is the current position of the video game market, You have numerous games flashing DLC in our face and season passes that gives you all but 2 pieces of content, Sure the content may be good, But the fact you are actually paying £60-80 for the full game is disgraceful, (note this is based on console prices, Not PC) not only that but even used games cost a lot these days, Farcry 3 for example a month ago was £37 used or £42 special edition new, Yes maybe that £5 means a lot to someone, But its entirely stupid.

If this measure meant cheaper brand new games, I would probably be all for it, But that wont happen will it?

Why do you feel they deserve anything in used sales?
Actually, this is already being litigated in court. What you have suggested there and what the poster earlier suggested is exactly what the industry wants to be able to do. They want to be able to get revenue from anything that you resell at any point in time. Look up the case of the student who resold textbooks and is being sued by the publishers now...

No it won't. It will mean cheaper quality games for the exact same prices we have now or slightly more.

Who says it does? The fact is nobody but Sony knows for sure if and how this system will be implemented. Perhaps it will work like you say perhaps not.

Perhaps they will use key dongles that can be relatively easily transferred form a console to another. Perhaps you will have to contact tech support in order to transfer your library form the broken console to the new one in the same way you need to ring up Microsoft for a windows key if your mother board dies. Or maybe in case of console failure you will have to send it in for repairs/key change over. A service Sony would surely charge for after the console I out of warranty.

No mater how this is implemented its not a good thing for the consumers.

My favorite part of the article:

'IGN reached out to Sony for comment but was told the company doesn't comment on rumour and speculation.'

How is it rumor or speculation if they have filed for a patent?
