I bought my games at release from Toys r us, wal mart, electronics botique, babbages ,and they all sold release games for MSRP. SF2 Turbo MSRP was 74.99. Chrono trigger was 79.99. FF3 was 79.99 MSRP as well. I could go on and on with this, the MSRP for SNES games was very high, and software prices are significantly cheaper now than they were 2 decades ago.. Its no secret that PS1 games were cheaper due to the media (CD vs cartridge,) and N64 attempted to match those prices to compete.

Read the comments on this page:

Again. I was buying games during that era for the SNES. From the sound of it, you didn't. I have a good idea of what brand new release titles were selling for.

I did not own an SNES, skipped it and got a atari instead.

So your picking and choosing your data while arguing for inflation? What about accounting for the market growth since 1992, or the average cost of living? Wages?

So if both Sony and Microsoft will stop second hand games, will this kill off Game Stop and Game Fly?
Will the WiiU be the only game system in Game Stop?

Think about it. Used games and digital distribution don't get along. When you buy and redeem a game license on steam, you certainly can't turn around and sell it to someone else -- You can buy gift purchases of course, but once you redeem a code on steam it is yours forever, and non transferable.

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, the entire reason for this happening is because MS and sony are adoping DD for all games on a wider scale. From what I understand, they're using a hybrid physical/DD system in which all games are offered via DD if not purchased on physical media. Therefore, removing used games sales is completely understandable.

They will need to start putting much bigger hard drives in their consoles then. Bioshock Infinite recommends 30GB, Battlefield 3 is almost 20GB (last I checked), Max Payne 3 is over 20GB, and Rage was nearly 25GB. Even Dragon Age 1 with all the DLC is near 25GB.

Given that next gen consoles will probably be able to handle nearly what upper-mid PCs can today, they won't be able to get away with measly 160GB hard drives any more. I have a 750GB drive dedicated to Steam, and it is about 80% full right now.

You state you were around during those times, but it is highly suspicious. SNES games costing a lot is quite common knowledge to anyone around during that time, and 60-80$ games were the norm at release. FF1-3 retailed for 74.99-79.99 at release,30$ just was not possible unless it was a very old game in the bargain bin, or used, period.
You keep pushing the MSRP while ignoring the S part. Nobody is required to sell a game at the suggested price.

80 dollar games were never the norm where I live. 80 dollars is over twice the price of the of the SNES itself (149.99 brand new, not 199.99). Even then it was considered overpriced and did not sell well.

Maybe we live in different countries?

My guess is the next gen consoles will probably have 500GB drives. Perhaps 1TB for the premium/elites what ever they want to call them.

Why do you feel they deserve anything in used sales?

I totally agree and don't know why it's such a big deal. As you stated with everything else the manufacturers don't see a penny after the unit is initially sold, I don't see why it should be any different with game studios.

This was unheard of prior to digital distribution - I for one welcome the PS4 and 720 heading towards digital distribution - perhaps some of the benefits PC gamers received will also apply to console gamers in the future.

The initial prices will still be high of course, but prices rapidly depreciate after the initial months of release. Personally, I don't mind the cost - 15 years ago prices for games were the same as they are now; inflation hasn't really followed console or PC games at all. I remember SNES games retailing for 60-70$ years and years ago, and that is roughly what new games cost now. Heck, with the 720 you can use your microsoft points to help pay for most games.
I remeber NES games retailing above the $60 mark
