[IGN] New Sony Patent Blocks Second Hand Games - Page 8

After the entire PSN fiasco the Playstation platform was and still is dead to me. I'm not going to invest into a platform where the manufacturer both passively and actively tries to screw me over at every turn. Whether it be putting zero effort towards protecting sensitive customer information or putting draconian restrictions on the platform. Good riddance.

The corporatist attitude is the attitude that you should be paid what you want for your hard work whether or not it is what the consumer wants. The capitalist attitude is the attitude that you should make the game the consumer wants, and reap profits when the consumer eagerly pays for it.
The consumer wants a second hand game market. In a capitalism, that means the producers provide them with games that can be resold. If the producer wants more money, they produce a higher quality game that attracts more first hand consumers. To respond by removing a consumer desired option is not capitalist.
The other side of it is if it's priced higher than you're willing to pay, don't buy it. There's a HUGE difference between something like the used car market and used games. Even if a used car is in perfect condition, the miles put on it devalue what is being received. With Blu Ray discs, there is zero devaluation of the product unless it's been damaged. If I put 1000 hours into Skyrim but take care of the disc, when I hand it to you you get the exact same product as a new game. There's zero incentive to buy new over used if the disc isn't damaged. Capitalism dictates the same product for the cheaper price is better. A used game is the exact same product. That's why you see multiplayer access codes, that's why you see day 1 DLC, that's why there are preorder exclusives.

Used/pirated games are "good" for gamers the same way cocaine is "good" for an energy boost. It's a short term fix with long term complications.

I know the publisher won. SCotUS is going to rule in favor of the student. It has to for the sake of the US economy.

Most people in the gaming industry are in it because they love seeing their work, their concepts, their brainchild, come to life.
You're fighting this without considering the price of winning.
P2P games are losing traction as well. F2P is gaining. If the current model cannot be adapted to increase profit margins, single player games will all be turned into MMOs. Look what happened to KOTOR.
If the corporatist attitude is having people actually pay you for the years of hard work that you put into something you loved rather than telling me "good job" while getting the game in a way that doesn't benefit you and actually jeopardizes your job, call me a corporatist.

Great Scott. Anonymous namedropping and an arguement for the same salary as nurses and teachers!... (look up Love for work or "calling" and see what you get)
But HAHA!
If single palyer games are being replaced by MMOs and F2P as you fear shouldn't the response, if we assume that we live in a free world with a free market be making single player games more attractive? not punitive? This is just hypotetichal but let's say Ford implements a no resale technique in all their sedans? wouldn't people just move away from ford?
I'm talking about the second hand market, Sonys sales will drop because kids can get the same game for xbox for half the price. You might not like it but the world doesn't care.

This might seem excessive but I Assure you it's not:
If you like your game so much why don't you marry it?
If you love your job so much why can't you accept minimum wage?

Yeah it's national economy baby.:
If it's a desired occupation:
If it's fullfilling work:
If employees see it as a calling:

Pay them less! Nuff said.

Don't go arguing economics from a lovers stance.

You mean the month or so of downtime? XBL's was still longer than that when it got attacked.

So because it's cheaper to make more copies of software for the distributor by either pressing the media onto a disc or letting you download it off the internet, you shouldnt be able to buy a used copy? That makes absolutely no sense. If anything since it's cheaper to make once the initial investment of developing is done, it should definitely be able to be purchased used. If anything they should just raise the game prices, they've been the same price forever, the used game market prices would go up as well, and everyone would be better off IMO

Time devalues everything, even information. The game is no different than buying a two day old paper cheaper than a current edition. Even if the information hasn't degraded, time has devalued the quality of the product. Which is why even new copies of a game get cheaper over time.
A used game is not the exact same product. It is an older product. This is why it is cheaper.

If it weren't for used game sales, I wouldn't have bought as many new games (and other content) as I did...

Reason 1) My console is used and came with some used games...
-This provided me with a good deal on hardware saving me money to buy more games and allowed me to resell the games un-wanted and buy new games that actually interested me
-I purchased new peripherals for the console, such as: controllers, remotes, etc
-I purchased DLC for my newly purchased games

Reason 2) I often sold used games I obtained to purchase new games of interest (again)
-I rarely ever sell games I buy for myself, but I will buy and resell used games in order to fund games I do want to purchase
-Clearly getting games on sale is definitely preferred, but I do pre-order games of extreme interest at full price (which I wouldn't feel as comfortable doing if I couldn't off-set the cost in some way, shape, or form)
-Again, sell used games to fund DLC for games in my collection (otherwise I can't see spending the money on some of this DLC - stuff that probably should have been in the game in the first place OR was such a pathetic attempt at a money grab that it makes me glad I didn't spend it entirely out of pocket)

Honestly, another factor for me is... Sometimes I want to borrow a game from a friend to see if I'll like it... If I do, I will go out and purchase it myself... If this becomes the new standard, no longer will this be a possibility. I do not sell games I enjoy, and I will absolutely purchase any games that I enjoy, even if I already beat them, I want to own them to show support and add to my collection. A game that I thoroughly enjoyed easily earns my money. I want to see the developers of games I enjoy, get the rewards they deserve for their work. Some games I won't know about unless I try them first, so unless they plan on offering demos on many more games if this becomes the standard, well, I'll simply be purchasing less games.

Sometimes you get games as gifts and you try them out since you have them anyway. Perhaps normally you wouldn't have bought it, but since you got it as a gift you'd give it a shot for the heck of it... Well, if that game is not to your liking, as of right now we can resell it to offset the cost of a game that we actually want. This ultimately results in 2 games sold that the publishers make money off of: 1 of the initial purchase as a gift, and 1 as the new game you purchase in place of that one. Yeah, so one now is floating around used, big deal... there's got to be compromise somewhere.

If this were anything like Steam and other direct download providers, we would be seeing killer deals all the time. Most of the games I have on Steam or Origin are from awesome deals (whether the codes came from Steam/Origin directly or it be from Amazon, GameFly, GreenMan, etc)... rarely ever do I spend full price on a digital download (if I do, it's got to be a VERY special game that I'm VERY eager for). I much prefer spending full price on console with something where I have the physical media, case, booklet, artwork, etc and have the ability to resell it if I deem it necessary.

I find used games sales to be a positive thing, for me anyway. It allows me to purchase many more games new than I ever would otherwise. It almost always turns into me purchasing new games. "Oooo! I sold a few bum games, now I have new game money! Time to go shopping!"
