CPU & Motherboard Combo $150

Thread Starter
I'm looking for the best CPU and motherboard combo for under $150. Most of my applications are video and picture editing; my son plays an occasional game too. I'm looking for the best combo overall, even after a overclock (I'm willing to spend extra cash on a good heat-sink 3-6 months from now). The only problem is that from my understanding, cheap motherboards don't overclock well. Some of the CPUs I have been looking at is the Athlon 64 3700+ and the Pentium D 805. My only requirement is that I want to run DDR400 RAM (I already own 1GB) and the total price (CPU and motherboard)needs to be under $150. Thanks for your help!

PS - I don't own a good video card right now so either AGP or PCI express would be fine.

I like the setup, I'm really trying to avoid purchasing RAM. I'm so cheap. Is there another motherboard that will push that CPU well? How does the Celeron compare to other CPUs even when pushed to the 4-5Ghz range?

Considering that the stock real FSB is 133mhz, any board that supports 800Mhz (200 real) should allow for decent overclocking.

Any of these boards will work, now it's just a matter of which overclocks the best. I suggest you download users manuals and read through the bios section to see what overclocking features it has.

I wouldnt say all that well. Its a great Overclocker for the Budget person like yourself. However because of its poor architecture IMO i dont think it will do miracles...Depends what you use your PC for mostly mate.

For example how would a Celeron 352 @ 4Mhz compare to a stock Athlon 3700+ or Pentium D 805?

Sounds reasonable. Does the motherboard have the ability to overclock any? It's not a requirement though.
