You could throw a SSD in there if you want to.
Caviar black drives are better than blues. You're better off with a black, if you can afford it.
The 7870 should be a 7950; he can afford it and it is definitely better. Othewise, this would be fine.

The build that "Alanim" posted is a solid build, but...

I agree with the GPU choice being changed to a 7950 because it is in your budget and will not feel out dated for a good amount of time. I also agree with your idea to just get a 256GB SSD for your OS and Game files, you could always get a smaller WD Black, 250GB or so, to use for other random files that you do not want on your SSD. That being said, since you have some external HDD's I would just go with the SSD if you are okay with plugging in an external HDD to store stuff. You will not be dissipointed with the performance of the SSD and it will still be within your budget. I love the Bitfenix prodigy case and I hope to do m-ITX for my next build using that case. You will be happy with the i5 CPU, I hear nothing but good things about them. Good luck!

SSD will help a lot with boot and load times.
