QX6700 or X6800

Thread Starter
Well, turns out im not gonna get a quad core anytime soon..

Every site and company I call says there backordered massively... So yea..

What should I do? Wait and get the QX6700 (prob be 07 and for $1,200+), or buy a x6800 now with overnight shipping and in 1 month buy a 2nd G80 and a 1k PSU?

Currently on a 100$ compaq and have been for 6 months. The processor is the last part I need...

I advice you to wait. You can OC the qx6700 to x6800 speed, but you can't add another 2 cores on that C2D now, can you?

It's easy to say when you're not involved... Maybe a PD805 could take you until february...

Honestly, I'd rather have a quad core and ONE g80 than a dualcore and two g80s. However, both ideas are overkill. If I were you, I'd go with a 6600 and a single g80. It will get the job done just fine. To answer your question, I'd wait for the QX6700. Both CPUs are monsters though.

What on earth would you need a quad-core and SLI 8800's for??? The whole point of DX10 is to move more and more processing to the GPU and thus requiring less performance from the CPU. I would think the 6800 is more than enough. You're paying a premium for something that

1) You cant utilize just yet
2) By the time you can utilize it, it will be
(a) cheaper
(b) replaced by even better implementations
I'd love to spend that much on computer hardware, but my other hobbies and my wife would not be too happy

I have great uses for quad-core myself. 2 cores for backing up my DVDs and dual core towards CS or some other game... I currently use a core for backing up and a core for my game if I'm in a rush.

Get an E6300, sell it when you can find a Kentsfield in stock, and buy the Kentsfield. You'll probably end up spending an extra $50 or so, but I would think it'd be worth it to get off that Compaq.
