Is it worth buying high end graphics card now? - Page 2

Depends. Do you need to upgrade your Mobo to get PCI-X? If so, the extra expense may be too much for now. AGP cards are going the way of the dodo so I would definately wait until you can upgrade your Mobo.

Edit:
Saw your upcomming system. Hehe.

Get the 7600 GT or GS. They are cheap, run 12 x 10 resolution great with today's games, and act as a great bridge.

i was gonna get the DX10 cards but then i saw a great deal for a 7950 GX2. I just bought the GX2 and will just upgrade my card in 2-3 years. From the various test i saw online the GX2 is on par with the 8800 GTS and sometimes better. Im not going to upgrade to vista anytime soon either.

Yeah besides, it'll prolly be at least a year t'ill the dx10 cards drop to about 2-3 hundred and in the mean time with the dx 9 updates a 7900,7950,x1900,x1950 should prolly give decent performance until then. Hell, I use a 9600xt right now and it doesn't play the newest games maxed out but it was able to handle up to doom3 just fine and it was old when I bought it 2 years ago.

It's probably DX9.0L you're referring to, and that was for Vista being able to support DX9.

I dont think game developers are stupid enough to alienate people who cant afford DX10 cards.

It depends. If you upgrade to a high-end graphics card every 6-8 months like I do, then it would be worth it to upgrade now. If you are someone who likes to party, call me. I'm lonely.

Yes, it's worth it to buy a high end DX9 card now. Even though theres DX10 out right now, theres no software/games to utilize DX10 and even when Vista comes out, you'll have to buy that and still not alot of games will be able to run DX10. If you need to upgrade, just buy a nice DX9 card now then get DX10 late next year or something.

well if u go back say 3-4months ago. a DX8.1 card could run every single game out. i am talking about the Radeon 9200. yeh i am upgrading my 3dcard now. to a X1650XT. but only because i am sick of 640x480 lol. plus my old little 9600XT Ultra... wont run the latest games 4 much longer i think. oh also if u go back say 6-7month ago even 3dcards with no SM at all. could still run the latest games. and well some were like 4-5 years old some even 6. so i don't think that game developers will cut DX9 out 4 a long time yet. maybe in like 2-3years they might. but what does that matter??? it will still do the job very nicely 4 now. so if have got the $$$$$ to upgrade. then go ahead and upgrade.
