The room was really cold last night, so I don't think the room temp was a factor.

For anyone interested in working with this kind of medium, there's a product called Paper Pulp which is really nice to work with. It doesn't dry as smooth, but it's really reasonable $. Or you can make it at home with a blender, paper, screen and wallpaper paste in powder form .wink.gif

I will definitely keep this in mind. I would love to give it a try.

The classroom had shelves that we set the pottery on. Then we laid plastic over the top loosely. Basically any plastic, even a plastic bag from a store would work. We would check the pottery everyday making adjustments as needed to make sure it was drying slowly. After about 5 days or so, we would remove the plastic completely. It could take another week for the pottery to become "bone dry" and ready for the first fire in the kiln. After the first fire, then you dip or apply the glaze and it is ready for the second fire in the kiln.

Oops, sorry I think we are getting off topic.

Too cold to be out in the garage cutting the window...
actually the truth is that it's Monday Night and The Bachelor is on tv. (I apologize, just keeping it real).
So I got this idea that maybe I won't paint a plain old boring flat face on the front of the case.
Now I want to make an actual 3-D cut face out of papier mache.
It's what I do. This is my comfort zone..
By the way, the large bow made from paper clay the other night, is still not dry enough to start sanding.
Here's a few picks of the process of making an armature for the front.

Using wadded up newsprint, and taping the heck out of it.

Next step the traditional layering of paper strips with glue. Many, many layers.
Talk to you soon! smile.gif

Progress Update.
Worked on the first papier mache layer of the front panel kitty head. Long way to go yet.

When it starts drying, there a lot of wrinkles. They smooth out with each layer, but in the end, there will be some sanding.

Spend two hours sanding the bow for the window. I actually thought it would take 15 mins...(wrong again).

Next step is to gesso the bow and paint. Yeah! Can't wait to get to that part.
The papier mache kitty face is going to take some time. The dry time between layers is long, maybe 2-3 days.
I will enjoy the break between layers. I can't believe how obsessed I've become over this build. And yes, I've already been thinking about what to build next! kookoo.gif
