Problems updating/installing Windows 7 with nVidia GPU (works fine with AMD). Warning: LONG POST!!!!!!!!!

Thread Starter
Over the holidays I finally got around to putting a GTX 560 in my family's HTPC, which originally had an AMD 6850 in it, and everything was working fine for about a week. Then out of nowhere I started getting random display driver crashes. Originally, I believed it was because I did not do a fresh install after removing the AMD drivers, so when I got more free time I decided to do a clean install of Windows 7.

I installed W7 x64 on Wednesday (two days ago) and had all sorts of problems installing drivers and updates. The first thing I normally do is install necessary drivers and then the windows updates. I downloaded the latest nVidia drives (310.70) which gave me a generic error when I tried to install them, so I kept trying new drivers until I found one that installed (306.23) and it seemed to work. So then I started updating windows, and after the first reboot from updating windows the display drivers started acting up again.

After the drivers started to work again I continued updating windows, and had a ton of trouble, I would get multiple failed updates and what not. Then after about five restarts (to get all the necessary files updated) it would not let me update to SP1 and the error code it gave me was 0x8007000E which has to do with running out of memory or something, which I though was weird as I had SP1 before the re-install and didn't remove any ram.

Anyways, I gave up and did another fresh install, and had the same exact problems. So I said the hell with it and put the AMD 6850 back in and did another fresh install and everything worked fine. While windows was installing/updating I put the GTX 560 in another computer and set it up for hybrid physx (with 285.62 drivers) with my 7950 to see if it would work for that as I hate to have a card go to waste. It seemed to work fine.

That made me believe that I was doing something wrong when installing windows, so I re-installed windows with the GTX 560 again except I didn't install any drivers for anything, and it was still giving me problems. For kicks and giggles I decided to install Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) to see what would happen. Now I am a linux n00b, but it seemed to be working as everything installed properly, and I was able to play some .MKV file in VLC to see if I would get any crashes/test to see that the card was working, which it was.

Now since this is my family's HTPC I knew that Linux would be too confusing for them to use while I go back to college (as blurays are nearly impossible to play), so I took one more crack at W7, which failed. After messing with this for about 10ish hours over the past three days, I put the 6850 back in and am typing this message on the computer, which now has W7 SP1 installed.

Now for my questions: Why would a graphics card cause problems for installing windows updates? Why would it work in Linux and not windows? Also why would it work in another computer with windows as a physx card? Also I am assuming I have just significantly lowered the lifespan of my Crucial M4

Specs:
CPU: i5-760 @ stock
RAM: 4gb ADATA 1600mhz
Mobo: P55-GD65
SSD: Crucial M4 128gb + HDD: Spinpoint F1
PSU: Neo Eco 520w
Case: Rosewill Redbone
GPU: Sapphire 6850/MSI GTX 560 (dual fan)

Sorry for the long post, well rant, but thanks for reading and any help would be much appritiated!
-JMT

Ps I really do not want to re-install windows for like the 20th time biggrin.gif

first, that 310.70 driver is crappy and that is widely known, use the 306.97

second, do you have your clock set to correct time?

It would take a lot more than this to lower the lifespan of the Crucial M4 to any noticeable degree.  ;)

Anyway, can you try the 560 in the HTPC one more time, but this time use a pre 300-series driver?  To be honest, I recommend actually using 285.62.  This is what I'm using for my 580, and I refuse to use anything newer because it seems like every time I try a newer version, I end up with one problem or another.

If you need the installer for 285.62, then I can provide it.

Sounds like a bad card, try to RMA it. Even if you can still play game to a certain extent it can still be a bad card. A bad video card will make a computer act pretty crazy, if you can test the card in a different computer to see if it acts the same.

Or maybe bump the voltage up with afterburner or something?

Good to know that ssd's are more durable than I believed them to be (I get mad if I forget to put my downloads folder on another hdd just to avoid using writes on the ssd), and with all the time I already spent, one more try wont hurt right? biggrin.gif

Not sure if I can, bought it open box from newegg a little over a year ago, and it was happily chugging through games until I got my 7950 in June/July, I hope it isn't dead sad-smiley-002.gif I'll email MSI about it on monday if I stil cannot get it to work. And I'll try to give it some more voltage if all else fails biggrin.gif

Still no luck with the 285.62, but it is weird that I get a display driver 306.97 kernel has crashed. Why is windows update installing drivers over the already installed drivers?

Going to do one more clean install and just let windows do all of its updates again and clean the drivers out with driver sweeper and hope for the best, if not going to email MSI about an RMA.

Because your settings are telling it to.  ;)  I recommend the following:

  1. Change your Windows Update setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
  2. Change your Device Installation Settings to match the settings shown here.
  3. Reboot
  4. Reinstall 285.62
  5. Reboot

By changing your Windows Update setting over to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", you are put into the driver's seat.  This way, if you see something being offered by Windows Update that you don't want, then all you have to do is deselect it and then Hide it so that it never offers that update ever again.  By changing your Device Installation Settings to those settings in the screenshot, you're doubly guaranteed to never again have to deal with Windows Update installing drivers.

In other words, when you install a driver that you want (or one that is recommended to you), it stays that way.

HI

erm just to chime in..

And if TC's tips didn't work..

FYI Those 310 drivers are BAAADDD. .. they stopped ALL my games working. for. real

This sounds like chipset problem to me.. like a domino effect leading to the ram.
if it was the card you wouldn't get a RAM error. So I would, ..

Default on bios settings, except make sure your AHCI is active. and make sure the clock is correct, even in the bios. (well spotted ghostrider85)

During Install I would load the AHCI driver.. so you can rule out the bus for the SSD being the problem.

Check the latest chipset drivers.

Avoid Nvidia 310 completely*.

peacefully suggested.

Dava
