Hard Drive question.

Thread Starter
I am planning on getting a Xbox, the basic 4 gig model, and wanted to know if I can use my old laptop harddrive in it for more storage. Can I just put it in or is there something special I have to do?

Should work. There's a guide on ifixit.com involving replacing the hdd.

Note: The guide says the HDD has to be of WD(Western Digital) make. And it has to belong to anyone of the four series:

WD Scorpio Series BEVS/BEAS
WD Scorpio Blue Series BEVS/BEVT
WD Scorpio Black Series BEKT/BJKT
WD VelociRaptor Series

yes this advice is spot on!

I did this when i got my MW3 xbox.. i got a caddy off ebay.. but also youtube has vids on just taping cardboard to the bottom of the drive and wedging it in.

You need to have a compatible motherboard to flash it correctly. Almost all work. There are a few that don't. HDDHackr is the utility you need.

So this only works with a WD drive, that's kind of disappointing. My spare isn't WD, but I am guessing buying one would be cheaper than a Microsoft one. Thanks

You can find the old model HDD's for 360's pretty cheap. Take the HDD out of the case and slide it into the Xbox360 Slim.

Edit: Even checking ebay. The slim drives for a 250gb is going for like 30-50 used.

You could always get an external enclosure and put it in there. I use a number of my old hard drives for game saves and profiles. You can't even play the newest Halo without downloading 4GB of data so I adding the hard drive to my external drive and then all was good.
Of course you have to plug in thru the usb port and you have to format the drive using the xbox but you also don't have to use the entire drive so it's still all good. Hope this info helps and gives you some hope for your extra hard drive. Happy gaming thumb.gif
