Building a new PC. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thread Starter
This is what I am going to be getting sometime within the next 6 months:
Cooler Master HAF X
ASUS Maximus V FORMULA/THUNDERFX
Intel Core i7-3770K
Kingston HyperX Beast 16 GB Kit
Corsair Professional Series AX 1200 Watt
EVGA GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB
Windows 7 Pro x64

The video card can wait as I have a GTX 460 I can use right now. But I was wondering what I needed for a PS to run two of those cards (680s) as I would like to get another one in the future. I also need a good SSD at least 120GB - 256GB. I shall be getting a second set of that RAM when I get the money again. I shall be starting off with air cooler and getting a decent self sustained water cooler for my CPU later and I was wondering what is the best one for that as well.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. XD

unless youre going to be using applications that use hyper threading, id say save some money and buy the 3570k. I just bought mine yesterday, its and running fine. Try cutting back on some of the pricing, you dont need a 1200W psu with a 460. buy a 600w psu, and put what you would have spent on a 7850 or 7950. z77 extreme 4 motherboard is one of the most recommended mb right now. 8GB is all you need for gaming as well. agian, unless youre doing alot of rendering and such.

If you're just gaming a 3570K is just as good as the 3770K, if you have a reason for the i7 then it's fine.
That PSU is WAY overkill for anything, a good 650W is fine for SLI 680s. The AX650 would suite your needs perfectly.
The graphics card is good but if you're running at 1080p the 4GB of vram isn't really needed so the MSI Lightning 680 would be way better and at higher resolutions the 7970 would be a much more suited.
The RAM is great, you could go with some Samsung low voltage but the Kingston kit is good.
For an SSD if you want the best performance go with the 256GB OCZ Vector or Samsung 840, if you just want a good, solid, cheaper SSD then a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 is great.
The best air coolers on the market are the Noctua NH-D14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE and Thermalright Silver Arrow although big beefy heatsinks might interfere with that RAM.
You don't really need to venture into closed loop water cooling but if you want to then the NZXT Kraken X60 can't be beaten.
Hope this helped biggrin.gif
EDIT: Didn't mention the case, mobo or OS. The case is fine, good airflow but it's mainly down to personal preference. The mobo is solid, bit overpriced but good. Windows 7 Home Premium is all you need really, most people don't have a use for the extra features in the Pro version. Do you really have need for that much RAM by the way? 16GB is overkill for a start but then adding another kit to make 32GB is a bit crazy.

Well. I also want to future proof it. I don't want to upgrade for a long time. And I also want to play in 3D which is why I am opting for the 4GB card and the I7. The motherboard has the lucid technology which boosts game performance and is only on a few MBs. and 32GB of ram is also for 3D and future applications. I already have a 3D monitor BenQ xl2420tx. And this will be my last computer for some time. XD

Looks good, little overkill even for futureproofing in some areas but its your money in the end! If you're going to be running 2x 680s, you can get away with a 1000w PSU or a quality 850w but don't NEED 1200w. For SSD's, samsung's 840 series are great performance, if you're looking for less $$ crucial M4's are a great price/performer.

Do you mean just playing in 3D? Or will you also be doing 3D rendering later on (hence the high amount of ram)?

If its JUST gaming in 3D, an i5 will still work as well as an i7 and 32GB of ram is still too much. You could get a 16GB set for now and buy another later on IF any application you use would need more than 16GB (8Gb should also be fine for now though)

Will I not need a good PS to run nvidia surround in 3D? If I do get 3 monitors? It will be a lot of graphics power being used there.

And thanks for all the suggestions.

If you want 3 monitors, go with AMD. They're eyefinity has been in dev for years. so they know how to really get you going, and they offer 3d too, but not as well as nvidia.

How about waiting a little bit. CES is in a couple days, the 8xxx GPUs, and Haswell, should be coming out fairly soon. I know you should play the waiting game for long periods of time but let's see what kind of things are announced at CES.
