It's called marketing. Steam.. piston.. it all follows the same vein. Pistons are also a part of engines that are involved in much of the work in the locomotion, as any computer running the Steam client is for them. Have you noticed what's on their program shortcut? It's a shaft. Marketing.

Devs need to start using OpenGL. Direct X offers no tangible benefits to anyone aside from Microsoft. Certainly not the gamers.

I concur! But as big as Microsoft is, that might not happen for awhile or at all.

Ignoring that DX11 is far faster and more featured. (Ignoring OpenGL extensions.)

On the other hand, Source is unusually modular. Especially for an engine of it's time. From a development standpoint, this is a great feature. Just none of the tools for source are all that well developed and going inside the code yourself will just leave you with a greater understanding of how the engine evolved vs how to actually use the beast.
The Source Engine is an evolution of the GoldSrc engine, which itself is a heavily modified Quake engine, not Quake III Arena engine. They both use similar file formats, such as MDL, BSP, and QC, although they work differently. Source's modular file architecture derives from id Software's engines as well. I personally think VALVe should build Source 2 from scratch because Source is a horribly unstable engine from my experience (had quite a few games and mods crash and bug out) and was a nightmare for me to mod due to poor documentation, mod tools and confusing architecture (I tried id Tech 3 (Quake III Arena engine) and found it much more intuitive to mod).

It has already been officially stated that the Steambox won't be launching this year, so you may want to edit that out of the thread title, unless we're just maintaining the article title. It's false information though.
