Funny in my g75 I found masking tape holding things down, and the rubber feet are falling out already. This is why I'm never anything from them again.
Masking tape. Ha.
I'm actually thinking about baking the GPU from my G73; I've always wanted to do it because of how ghetto it is, and how successful it is. Laziness is the only thing stopping me. One thing I'll say about the G73 is it's reinforced with screws like no tomorrow. I've taken it apart about 15 times now and every single time I do, I have 3-4 screws left over that I forgot to put in somehow. It's still solid, so +1 for that I guess.

The 7970M is about on par with a GTX 570 on the desktop side, so it's by no means a slouch.
I've seen the 7970M matching the 680M in many reviews. The 680 is downclocked considerably and has no Kepler boost while the 7970M is nearly identical to the 7870.
I wouldn't look at anything but the 7970M, to be honest. The lower end rebrandings just don't stand up to the value of the 7970M, while the 680M is simply too expensive chiming in at more than $200 more than the 7970M for marginal performance gains.
