3930K with GTX 880 (Maxwell)

Thread Starter
I know everything will be a guess at this point but I am willing to accept any guesses or opinions on this.

I have a 3930K and was wondering if it would be able to keep up with the GTX 880 which will be based on NVIDIA's Maxwell architecture. Would my 3930K bottleneck the GTX 880?

I watched a review of 4 x HD 7970 cards in CrossFireX running on a 3960X. The 3960X started to bottleneck the four cards in 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark11 in P scores.

Link: http://youtu.be/7FhJxC-gjII?t=12m11s

So now, can the GTX 880 be more powerful than four HD 7970s?

I know this may sound like a stupid question at this point, but I like single-GPU cards and the current single-GPU cards don't really match my needs. redface.gif

Very unlikely, nor will it have CPU cycle eating driver overhead of multi-card configs.

Agreed, a single more powerful card utilizes the CPU less than two lesser cards. The 880 won't even come close to 4 7970s in performance, I doubt it will even beat 2 tongue.gif

No chance in hell will an 880 outperform 4 7970s. Maybe an 890 if they decide to go down that route but even then the chances of it outperforming 4 7970s is slim.

i would imagine you would be fine even with two 880s with an oc'd 3930k

Well the current 680 is about as fast as 2.5 - 3 5970s. So I suppose it's possible that a 880 would outrun quad 7970s. I have a 3930K as well and hopefully they optimize the drivers at that point to draw less on the CPU. Either that or upgrade to the ivy-e 2011 with 8 cores.

Where are you getting this info?
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/587?vs=555
In most cases a single 680 isn't even 1.5 times faster than a single 5970.
Ivy Bridge-e processors will still only be 6 core not 8 core.

The more cards you add the less efficient it gets, so two cards is also less efficient than one and uses more CPU cycles.
