If I had a choice between the Q701 or DT880 (mine are the 600Ω Premium), I would go for the DT880s in a heartbeat.
Positioning sucks on all of those headphones, really bad.

I use the Q701 for competitive FPS all the time. It is just fine.

Seriously I have no idea why people freak out over this stuff. As long as you can hear someone sneak up behind you, you are fine. I promise you, unless you are a mutant and have super human hearing, your KDR is not going to go up more than 4 kills per game between a 10 dollar pair of ear buds to a 5K pair of headphones. If it does, then it is because you have absolutely no concept of looking at your mini map.

I have tested close to 50 headphones now ranging from 8 dollar headphones all the way up to the stax 009s. The ONLY pair of headphones that truly made any type of difference to my 3.2 KDR was the razer tiamat. Unfortunately it sounds so bad, than you might as well stick a wasps nest in your ear. The other was the stax lambda nova. The stax lambda sounded great, but it was the fact that they were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO comfortable that I was able to focus 110% on the game that gave me the advantage.

The take away is, FOCUS ON AUDIO QUALITY!!!!

Sorry to hear that mate. I have a pair of tiamats 7.1 brand new only used for couple of hours. Obviously they are not going to kill a set of 880s or 701s but for directional they are supperb. I dont want them lying around i would sell them cheap if you want them.

Things i liked about them
real 7.1! you can hear exactly where someone is with out having to turn in game and focus.
They look brilliant and the volume control is beautiful.
Quality built.

Cons
Drivers could have been better but you cant expect something so cheap to smash $600 headphones.
Mic is apparently not to good. i haven't tried it but i never use a mic when i game online with pc.

No worries.

So whats your plan now? How much do you have to spend?

So what did you do? Did you get another headphone? I'm in a similar situation and I don't know if I should go for the AKG Q701 or some Razer headset like Megalodon or even Kave from Roccat. I can't try them out, since local stores here in Brazil don't sell these brands. I only have Sony and Panasonic headphones around here. Awaiting response :]

Keep in mind that trying on a fresh pair of headphones in the store won't be a good representation of comfort. It takes a little time for earcups to break in and soften up. You can also add foam to the headband if you don't like bumps like the Q701 have.
