OP which country are you from ? the HD 7870 Tahiti LE is available in the same price range as HD 7870. 1536 stream processors at 975 mhz . 256 bit memory at 1.5 Ghz (192 Gb/s). 32 ROPs. 8 - 10% faster than HD 7870 at stock. overclocks to 1200 mhz and matches GTX 680 / HD 7970(1 Ghz) performance in games . excellent price perf.

How many watts are we talking about here? For instance 7870 @ 1200 core?
The 7870 is a better overall card, with more OC potential.
Even if it's not a TahitiLE card, a well clocked 7870 keeps up with a 7950 just fine.

OP is using a HX-650 so that honestly shouldn't be concern here, running a few in CF would be reasonable w/ that PSU.

GTX660 Hawk is not available in my country and I'm not sure if it will ever be. Besides, even if it were to become available, it would probably be priced same as a HD7870 Hawk. Additionally, despite being a Hawk card, I think it still has voltage control restrictions, not sure about this as they don't mention anything about it on the review and triple overvoltage is not listed as a feature on the MSI website. If this is the case, I'm not sure I'd fork out the extra money for it.

Pretty much the same problem, Tahiti LE HD7870's are not available here and I don't know if they will ever be. It'd be great if they were though.

Unfortunately, the GTX660 recently had it's price increased and it doesn't really seem like a good deal anymore, and considering the votes, I'll go with the HD7870. Slightly nervous about this though, you know... after 11 years of nVidia. biggrin.gif

GTX660 Twin Frozr III priced at 309$ (VAT included)
HD7870 Hawk priced at 339$ (VAT included)

For some reason, regular 7870's are priced higher than the Hawk edition. Not sure if the computer store personnel are aware of this, not that I'd want them to be.

Thanks for the help everybody.

which country are you from ? the MSI HD 7870 Hawk is a high quality HD 7870. built for overclocking. HD 7870 matches the GTX 660 Ti in most games. A heavily overclocked HD 7870(1.3 Ghz) can even exceed a GTX 660 Ti (1.3 Ghz). the 256 bit memory and 32 ROPs allow the HD 7870 to scale performance very well with overclocking.

HD 7870 without a doubt

As a personal owner of the 7870 Hawk, I vote to it.

7870, don't feel nervous about moving from Nvidia to AMD, it will be fine.

Purchased the 7870 about a week ago and after installing it the first thing to notice was the annoying dust removal tech on system start up. Really got me bothered thinking it would always be loud on start up, even after a restart. Anyway, it's not an issue anymore as all I had to do was switch to the unlocked bios, making the fans inaudible. I think switching the bios made the fans reverse spin at low rpm or disabled dust removal altogether. Don't really care about having dust removal gimmicks. Having the option to disable the leds would also be great. biggrin.gif

I have tried two games during this week: Crysis 2 and Far Cry 3, mostly to get an idea about the card's capabilities. Playing those games, I've encountered two problems: first one is stuttering, the second problem is some weird noise at high fps.

So, about the stuttering... this happens in Far Cry 3. The game never goes below 30 fps on Ultra settings with 4x MSAA and HDAO, yet the stuttering makes it almost unplayable and this happens even at 50-60 fps. I have messed around with vsync, GPU buffered frames and some other settings but it just doesn't help. Additionally, the game is patched to version 1.04 and I'm using Catalyst 12.11 with the Far Cry 3 driver patch applied.

I would like some information on how common stuttering is, any other titles having trouble with Radeon cards, if so... which ones? Games are hardly playable with it, and it's quite amusing that Far Cry 3 was bundled with 7870's. The game was released over a month ago and it still runs awful. Reading about stuttering being more common with Crossfire is also a concern. Does nVidia also have stuttering issues with certain games? I've never encountered stuttering before, but then again I didn't play many games lately.

And now, the second problem. The card is noisy, but only while running at high fps, which mostly happens in game menus. I've noticed this in Crysis' menu when the game runs at hundreds of fps and I'm certain it's not fan related as I've limited the fans to 40%. Never encountered this before and I'm not sure if it's normal for the card to make that annoying noise. Turning vsync on definitely removed the noise but something just doesn't seem right about this. Is there something wrong with the card?

If stuttering is common with Radeons, then I'm afraid I'll have to return the card. Just won't put up with it. Maybe get a MSI GTX 660ti Power Edition. thinking.gif
