[Gizmodo] USB 3.0 Is Going To Double Speeds - Page 4

Where are you guys getting that USB 3.0 isn't 10x faster than 2.0? Both the theoretical and real speed of 3.0 is about 10x that of 2.0.

USB 2.0's theoretical is 60 MB/s, but I've only seen it top out at 30 MB/s, usually less than that. The current USB 3.0 is much faster if your drive can handle it. For example:

I have a USB 3.0 enclosure myself and it has no trouble accommodating my 2TB WD Green's max speed of ~110 MB/s. It's a really nice thing to have for big transfers.

I have to agree with this. I've been running a 2TB drive in my rosewill usb 3.0 dock for well over a year. Copying large files between my sata III SSD and the 2TB usually net me around 70-100MB/s. There is a huge difference between 2.0 & 3.0. At least for me it's been night an day. I'll also agree with others when they say we have no devices that take advantage of 3.0's theoretical top speed, but I welcome any speed increase in this industry!

i thought I heard at one point that there was going to be some updated specs to USB 3.0 that include more power delivery so we can charge laptops and run LCD's! Makes me wonder why we need Thunderbolt at all tongue.gif

I've had no issues achieving >100MB/s over USB 3.0. Those who claim that there is no significant difference between 2.0 and 3.0 speeds are probably using at least one of the following: a crappy controller, old drivers, a bad cable, low-end thumb drive or a cheapo drive cabinet.

I can't believe the number of people here that don't have any USB 3.0 devices. The technology has been out for a while now. I have a 3TB external HDD that uses USB 3.0. With that drive plugged into a USB 3.0 port on my motherboard I get anywhere from 50-120MBps. It depends on the number of files, individual file size, and total amount of data to be copied.

I think 3.0 hardware is just starting to trickle down to regular people. At the college I work at, i see more and more student's bring down busted 3.0 hard drives tongue.gif Even so, they are all using these on 2.0 ports still. I don't think I would recommend to anyone to buy a 2.0 device anymore. Get the 3.0 equivalent if you can!

I think people get too excited and forget that HDDs aren't really that fast.

I'm having a hard time taking Gizmodo seriously here, because this article is a bit of a joke.
The way they phrased it, like SuperSpeed USB is the name of the enhancement, hints that the author has no clue what she's talking about. There is also no mention of the 'completed by the middle of this year' from the original press release, instead we just get a vague 'later this year'. Also, yes this is just nitpicking, but 'when you download a movie or a CD, it could take much less time thanks to the new standard' ... just no.

While an increase in USB 3.0 speed is a healthy thing, it still can't use TRIM, PCIe and DP. I don't see any uses for these kind of speeds just yet, we haven't even maxed out USB 3.0 yet with USB devices!
The current USB 3.0 is ALREADY called Superspeed....

fail on their part.
