Need sound card that can switch between speakers and headphones when both are plugged in

Thread Starter
For the last year or so I've been using an X-fi Titanium HD with headphones, no speakers. I recently picked up some Audioengine speakers and was pissed to discover that when both speakers and headphones are plugged in to the x-fi at the same time it defaults to headphone out and the only way to switch back is to unplug the headphones. That just simply won't do.

What are the current comparable cards that can switch between speakers and headphones without having to unplug one of them?
Is the ASUS Xonar Essence STX my best option even though it's 4 years old?

Thanks!

I don't know if this would work for you but what I have done is just plugged my speakers and headphones up with a 3.5mm female splitter.

And since my speakers and headphones are driving by separate amplifiers I just turn on and off the amps as I want to listen back and forth.

I use one of these.

Yup, any Asus card will be able to switch via their control panel.
It's so little!

There might be a way to bypass that through software provided w/ your card.
I can do this w/ mine, but it's not a Creative card so I can't confirm if that works for yours, maybe someone else can / you can check.

In addition to a splitter you also could get a 3.5mm extention cable and just plug into that from your desk when you want to switch to your headphones.
There's also the option of a DAC / headphone amp combo. You can plug directly into that when you want to use your cans and keep it accessible on your desk as well.

There is an option to leave the main outs working when something is plugged into the front headphone jack. However, it doesn't work for the rear headphone jack. Only one of the rear outputs (the RCA or the 1/8") will work at a time.

It should be in the Creative Control Panel, marked Headphone Detection.

I have the Xonar ST which is basically the same as the STX mines just a PCI slot as opposed to PCIE but you can switch through the main control panel. I had an old SB card with that issue and I just put a short extension from the rear out that sat in front of the PC and just plugged the headphones in there instead of having to reach behind the machine everytime. Might not be a perfect solution but if theres no way to do it in the software... Im guessing you dont want to have to reach behind your pc everytime, the Asus cards also have a front panel audio port so your headphone and mic jacks on the front of your case will work with the card as well, assuming your case has them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I spent some time confirming that the HD doesn't have any way to switch via software. I'd really like to avoid dealing with splitters, extensions, external amps, etc mostly for simplicity, ease of use and space concerns, and I think adding an external headphone amp would kind of defeat the purpose of having a card with a headphone amp, but that's just my opinion. This is primarily a gaming rig and I have a separate "hi-fi" setup for music at work so adding more stuff would kind of duplicate what I already have. I think an ASUS is probably what I'll switch to.
Thanks!

The newly released Creative Z series has a switch in the software to do exactly what you want. Z and Zx are the same card, the Zx just comes with the control knob. The ZxR is the high-end model.

As well everyone seems impressed with the new drivers and software suite, so it's worth looking into at least.
