I just ordered:

10x Scythe Gentle Typhoon - D1225C12B5AP-15 - 1850rpm

1x Alphacool UT60 240

1x Alphacool UT60 360

I plan to control the fans through the Koolance RP-1250, I'm hoping it won't be too loud at the higher speeds.

I also hope I will have room for these radiators+fan combination. I think I will.

Parts have arrived, but Houston, we have a problem...

Everything was going along swimmingly:

Anti-static wristband


CPU/Waterblock installed and ready to go


On to Graphics Card #1 and Waterblock


Well, no back plate behind the GPU... well, who needs a back plate, really, the waterblock screws into the card in many places, and I read in Newegg reviews for this graphics card that the Koolance waterblock WILL fit this card, see: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632


****, it doesn't fit. The front (end with the DVI plug) sits flush


BUT the back is not flush


The components shown here are TOO TALL


Well, I feel thoroughly screwed. I'm not sure where to go from here. The PCB is correct. All of the holes line up. But, some of the components on the board are too tall.



I am giving consideration to using a Dremel tool to shave a few millimeters off the corresponding area on the water block.

Any suggestions welcome.

NOOOOO! Dont shave the water block, just grind down the offending vga parts that are just too tall ....just kidding, dont do that.
How thick is the copper where you want to shave it down?

This image I think illustrates everything I'm talking about:



Beginning at the far left you can see that there is a gap above the cylindrical component giving room for that part of the waterblock to lower down some.

Moving right, you see rectangular component that is the offending component. Just above that component you can see the thickness of the part of the waterblock that I am interested in shaving down.

You can see if I tried this it might take half of the existing material to get the card to sit flush against the pcb.

Here is another photo of the same thing:


And here is a look from the other side of that row of offending components, its a little harder to see the parts in this pic because the waterblock wraps around components and hides them somewhat.

Measured with a ruler, its between 2 and 3mm. Not much room there.

I conclude the block does not make good contact with the gpu's cpu?If this area was thicker would all be good?

You conclude correctly. The issue is that the components are too tall, and as a result the block doesn't sit flat on the gpu (the cpu on a graphics card is called a gpu thumb.gif) instead it sits at an angle with one side making contact and one side not. But, it doesn't need to be ticker, it needs to be thinner.

One problem is that it is thin already, so making it more thin might be a problem. :sad:

I just learned why it won't fit. XFX has changed the card with a follow up version, see this link: http://www.overclock.net/t/1347368/questionable-xfx-double-d-7970-ghz-edition/10#post_19007151

Apparently they added a second DVI port. In doing so, they screwed me. Here is a pic of the original pcb. Compare the picture of my card to this card (which I got from the EK Watercooling Website:



As you can see, the pcb has changed. An examination of my card reveals that there is indeed a second DVI plug on the back of the card. For comparison you can see the pic on Newegg (who I bought it from) which shows only one DVI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

Although it looks like they are in the process of getting that picture changed.

Well, I could send the Koolance back and look into a different waterblock.

That would probably be the cheapest way, I think. I don't know, I'm still shell shocked by the disappointment.
