WD Live for video streaming?

Thread Starter
I'm not sure if this is the right subforum for this but I couldn't think of a better spot right now. Is there a way to stream videos from my home fileserver to the Western Digital Live device? I use subsonic for music streaming and occasionally streaming videos through a browser but doubt it would work on this device.

I have one of these love it and i found a really nice app to stream movies including mkv files wmp works also but it wont show mkvs on the wd live like serviio does it will play large files no problem also few other programs that will work also are ps3 media server and tversity but serviio is free and works best for me.

Yeah, Serviio is pretty awesome. I use it to stream video over my LAN to my Smart TV here in the office. The TV in the living room has a Google TV device, so I use Plex for that.

SubSonic is great for music, but it's video support is lacking. It requires flash to play videos, which is not available on iOS and is not available on newer version of Android....so that limits it's use to browsers that can run flash. There is a plan to switch it over to HTML5, but it's slow going.

Bal3Wolf, you are the first other Kentuckian I have seen in the server area.

This isn't for me, it's for someone else who already owns the WD Live. I wanted to be able to stream my videos when I'm over their house. Is that possible?

Not over the internet but you can put files on a usb stick and plug it into the wd live if you have a big enugh usb stick.

Tell them to get a Roku. Download the Plex channel on their Roku, then install Plex Media Server on your storage box. Plex can (unsupported though, I think) stream over the internet to a Roku...which I have setup for my dad on the otherside of the state. Or...install the Plex Media Center app on a Laptop, and connect the laptop to a TV when you are over there. That's what I did at my sisters house over Christmas break.

WD Live won't accept streams over the internet, I don't think. Unless you could configure the ports that it looks on for a stream, and forward that port from your gateway device...and tell their WD Live to connect to it directly...but I don't know if that's possible with the WD Live. That's basically what I do with Plex over WAN on my dads Roku.

Lol they just got the WD Live for Xmas so I doubt they're going to get a new device. I will have to spend some time looking at the WD Live device and mess around with it a bit. I'm just not familiar with it so I was hoping someone else had one.

I stream movies from my server at home to any machine that has VLC on it, using port :8080 it's really easy to setup. thumb.gif
