AM2 3500+ vs 3600+X2 3dmark 06 question

My friend and i have both the exactly the same machine right down to a T, only difference is CPU, i got 3500+, he got 3600 dual core, we benched in 3dmark 06 and i got 3342 and he got 4076, is it the chip that makes such a difference? or is it something else, (no overclocking) plz help.

I would think its due to the effect of software coded for dual core, if 3D 06 is, unsure on that coding.
If 3D 06 isnt optimized for X2 cores, I don't see why there would be much or any differance, your single core had as much l2 cache as the x2.
Other possible effects
Are you sure both of you have the exact same BIOS settings?
Are the OS the same and did he trim out all the dead weight programs running in the back ground?

We got our machines at the same time, he had the bigger budget, SAME EVERTHING, bios, clocks, brand, PSU, everything the same. just 3.5 single vs 3.6 dual.

Did a little looking, 3D 06 is dual core optimized, that is where his advantage in the benchmark is. If a game, for example that is not dual core optimized you probably would have little or no differance in performance.

wouldn't you see good performance gains? since the CPU can dedicate one core just to the game. assuming the clock speed isn't a bottleneck.
Like my current 3700+ @ 2.6 Ghz, If i get a x2 4600 and OC that to 2.6-2.7 Ghz, would I not see a gain in performance in games such as BF2/BF2142. I know it's not duel core optimized but one whole core on the game, thats gota be something right? (assuming the most basic operations are running in the background plus skype, MSN, and G15 apps)
