Email programs not talking to POP3

Thread Starter
Well, been a loooonnnngggg time since I've posted. -.-````

So, I had a domain that wasn't being used and I decided to start using it. I set up sendmail and qpopper for pop3. Sendmail is working flawlessly, but I'm having issues with the pop3 part. The box receives the emails, but when set up with various email programs, it never gets there. I can do a mail command and see all the emails. I'm completely stumped at this point. I can provide more info later if anyone needs it... Ask what you need and I'll see what I can do. tongue.gif

Logs. Always check your logs. tongue.gif
That said, can you post them?

Probably 95% of all the problems I have on my servers can usually be sorted by going through them

Error logs. Also don try to use port 25 out. Most ISP like to block it.

Didn't really answer my question... Do you want to see the qpopper logs or what?

Also, in this situation, the ISP will have no relations with anything. Plus, I have this exact same setup with another domain that's been working fine for a VERY long time.

The error that I see with qpopper... mad.gif

Don't use sendmail, postfix is much easier to administrate. However there are much better MTAs out there (eg curiour).

Also, you're better off running IMAP than POP.

Use whatever your comfortable with to setup the mail server, I'm assuming you've done it before awhile ago. The error you posted is as if you started q popper and either restarted without the socket fully closing or issued the command again when you could not fetch your mail. Something along those lines, basically q popper is saying it can not bind to it's specified port. First thing, I need you to tell me what your setup is and or planning. For instance you said you had a unused domain and wanted to use it, which to me it sound's like you have bind setup and your running dns off your box and setting up your mail server. Since you said Outlook could not fetch the mail properly, brings us into client side. So I'm just trying to establish what exactly your running, and issue a "netstat -l" to see if qpopper is still listening on the port. It may just be something that easy where your process didn't fully restart when you were trying to check out what was going on and all you have to do is kill and restart the process.

The reason I recommend postfix is because it's compatiblewith sendmail but has massively easier config files. Sendmail is a pig to set up. The hardest MTA to set up in fact. And you gain nothing in the way of security nor features for using it. Which is why nearly all distros have replaced sendmail as their preferred MTA with postfix or even newer projects.

And IMAP is a much better protocol that POP because it offers folder sync ing . IMAPis like running your own Google mail or exchange server instead of just pulling new mail. Plus most MTA support IMAP or can easily be configured to use an MTA plugin.

I honestly think pop and sendmail are a waste of time
