Does QoS work?

Thread Starter
Hey guys so lately i been having really spotty internet compared to last week where the connection hangs up. I was resetting the router and noticed that Qos had been enabled (which it usually is not).

Looking through the priorities page i notice my housemate set his IP address (that he reserved for himself) to Priority 1, where the other IP address are set at priority 4. Would this cause the spottiness or would it be caused by another reason? redface.gif

Thanks for the help!

This is most likely the case. Especially if he configured it without really knowing what he was doing. Reliability is something you can configure via QoS. Before you change anything, you might ask him "just out of curiosity" if internet connectivity has been reliable for him. Do you guys share equal responsibility for paying for and configuring your internet service? If so, why would he go messing with things like that?

Thanks for the response tongue.gif +rep

hmmm, well im not sure his networking knowledge (only known him for 3 months) but he does know computers so i guess i would assume at least some networking knowledge? >_< . From what ive heard he does alot of torrenting, some voice chat and gaming.

But this is actually the second time ive seen this, the first time was .. 5-7 weeks ago i believe. I asked him about it and he said he was testing something, and the QoS doesnt seem to work. So i just reset the router.

There are a total of 4 of us in this apartment, where me and him set up the network. The internet is split evenly 4 ways, were i provided the networking equipment and another guy paid for the modem.

I usually set up this router without the QoS, since from my understanding with it off data packets are set first come first serve, which i feel is a better way to split data usage instead of prioritizing one persons task over another. (I will say im not super knowledgeable in networking but i do know some)

lol busted.

Torrent programs will also cause spotty internet all on there own. Restrict the upload limit at the very least in the torrent program.

Don't say anything, change the QOS to preference your computer then put a password on the router. See how long it takes him to notice. lol

Yeah, it sounds like your roommate is being a douche. You're splitting the monthly fees four ways evenly, so no one should be assigning priority like that. And the hardware isn't his, so he shouldn't be touching it. I'd be fairly pissed if I saw that.

hah tongue.gif i def would be tempted to restrict him but ill admit im am being a bit to nice redface.gif (although my GF says.. well yeah.. anyways rolleyes.gif) Im think i might just put it back at its original settings before the change, and if i find that this happens again ill probably change the password to the router.

I will say that i did put another one of my older routers on the network which i allowed him to mess with and flash dd-wrt on it since it gave him a better connection. Since i got this newer router i noticed he has moved to using this one rather then the old one... sigh..

Thanks for the input guys, reps biggrin.gif

Sorry to bring up an old topic, Okay so 2 weeks ago i enabled QoS and had the download and upload speed limited to 8mbps and 1 mbps. Would that be the correct way on limiting the max speed a single user can download? or is it for the whole network.. confused.gif

Ive set the QoS on "priority by protocol" but did not add any rules or certain tasks to be prioritized over others, as all i wanted to do is limit download speed.

Is there any settings that should be optimized or disabled for best performance?

and second, i just checked again and within the last 2 days he has put his Local ip address as highest priority .... Im debating on password locking the router, as this is the 3rd time ive seen this, but i want to make sure im not overreacting and the network is not being slown down by my doing.

Thanks biggrin.gif
