I'll give that a whirl. I should know better than to assume something linux related is going to work out of the box. Thanks for the help so far yall. I'll update.

Same thing after format. No picture at all, just sound. All I did was add the samba share off my server. Server specs are in my sig rig under FreeNASty. This is running on a powerline adapter from the server to the rasp.

Can you attempt to turn off any and all hardware decoding? I still suspect it is the license issue.

And to the other poster, hardware decoding is supported but you have to pay the royalty fees, which is why you have to buy the license. Otherwise software decoding for you. RaspberryPI is, in my opinion, right to keep the cost lower and license the hardware acceleration.

Keep us posted op. My pi is in the mail, and I will be doing what you are doing soon.

Well yes, I was only talking about hardware decoding support as well. But I thought the whole point of the Pi's chosen hardware was that it's all open and you didn't need to buy such crap to unlock things. I'm gutted tor read this frown.gif

If you can, try running the command "omxplayer -o hdmi filename" on the Pi. This should bypass any BMC specific settings, and omxplayer can play MKVs by itself.

My issue is with a certain type of AVI-enclosed video encoding (I can't remember which though). It does exactly what the OPs Pi does. All other AVIs work fine and MKVs play without an issue as well.

I've heard of RaspBMC causing some wierd issues with video playback, but I've never used it myself. Hopefully straight Rasbian will make some head-way here.

On another note...you mentioned it's connected to the network via powerline. Can you try playing something on the SD card itself? How about over a standard network connection (no powerline)? It may be a shot in the dark but that is one thing in your setup that is different than most others.

They initially included the hardware decoder with the license in their original plan but the license would have put them over their target price. So they decided to keep the hardware and allow people to pick it up as an add on if they chose too. The Pi itself, and of course the Linux OS, are all open - but the decoder individually requires a license from the patent holder. Usually the manufacturer soaks up the cost in production and passes it on, but again - target price.
