I'll give that a shot. Openelec would not play back video either. I can watch tv streams off the news channels.

What's the actual video format stored in the MKV container? I wonder if your issue isn't the same as mine but the container file is misleading.

I installed the licence keys, didn't fix my issue frown.gif

I know it's only around 4 bucks for the license, but I don't want to purchase it if I don't have to. I've got all .mkvs with these videos.

Sorry I think you misunderstand me. MKV isn't a video format, it's a container file. I guess you could liken it to a zip file (it's not really at all like that, but it's the best example i can think of off hand). Inside a ZIP you can have a multitude of different content; text files, etc. With an MPEG or MKV container you can have videos, audio, subtitles and so on. Those formats can be stored using different codecs. So an MKV video could actually be different types of videos.

VLC will display that information in the 'codec' tab in the video properties (i think, don't have it open so you may have to click around to find it)

Gotcha. Yeah I didn't understand that one fully (thanks for explaining). I'll check on the format.

Guess it's time to ssh into the pie.

Weird video stream, that codec had been superseded quit some years ago. Did you encode these videos yourself?

Anyhow, the codec I'm struggling with is MS MPEG-4 Video v3 (DIV3). Well, I'm assuming that's the issue as it's only files with that video stream that fail to render on the Pi.

it's the default format for makemkv ripping. I guess I could convert them to another codec with vlc player. Is there a format that for sure works?

Ah!

Re-encode in H.264. Pi handles H.264 natively with no issues.

Sorry I was wrong about the codec license. I'm glad that it looks to be just a codec issue though.

I'm excited, my Pi is supposed to arrive today!
