[EGM] PlayStation 3 Lifetime Shipments Overtake Xbox 360 - Page 13

Most games are actually developed for the 360 and then ported to PS3 or PC, and the ports are not always the best. Sure the PS3 gets a good game every now and then but weak performing multi platform games can get old sometimes. Even games like Call of Duty have lack luster support for the ps3 side. Uncharted and God of War are vary good games, heavy rain was good as well but everything else was meh on my part. Forza has taken away my love of the once great GT series, updates have made the newer one better but still not that great of a game. Halo gets a lifetime pass for me because halo ce was epic, like half life epic. tongue.gif Gears was a pretty decent series to debut on the 360 as well.

I have no dislikes for the PS3 and good for it for passing up the 360 on global sales, but 360 is still making so much more $$. 360 is still getting butt loads of new features every update, pretty soon it may just replace your cable box. Already you can turn it into a media extender and stream HD TV to it no problem, the dash board is always getting new updates and new looks. Sony may have done a good job on the PS3 but you can defiantly tell the difference between the two and what gets more money and good software engineers. Updates also tend to be quick and small compared to the ps3, games can be fully installed to the hard drive allowing you to never wear down your drives laser out. Also the system runs pretty much silent when installed to HDD even with my older jasper unit. I have the older BC 80GB PS3 with a 250gb HDD installed. The thing can get pretty loud even after replacing the TIM, noticeable during quiet scene in a movie. Though still quiet with a disc running unlike the 360.

Also xbox live is pretty cheap. Most who get a 360 know the cost and probably can afford it. Really if you have a hard time getting 60 bucks then all you need to do is get a jar, and every month stick 5 bucks in it. After a year you have enough for xbox live, repeat. Simple as that. If someone has a problem saving 5 bucks a month then maybe getting a 360 wasn't the best idea.

Xbox live is a ripoff! 99% of the crap that is on live I can do for free on my pc. I paid for a system and a game, multiplayer should be free. I don't feel I should be forced into paying a specific amount with no coice of which content I would like to receive. You should be able to pick and choose the other payable crap that you would like access to. And live is not very mature, there are tons of idiots who will get your "rating" knocked down because you beat them at HALO, or because they just don't like you. Since the chats are not moderated it becomes a he said she said argument. I'll agree with you that the 360 is quieter than PS3, this is because there are no fans to keep it from overheating and getting a RROD.

For both system I'd say a lil bit of cleaning would've granted people longer life but more so with the PS3, it has a self cleaning mode but you'd have to read the manual to figure that out wink.gif

Depends when it was made.

2011 was around 10%

Dont be so selective.

It costs a lot of money to run the online service. I'm sure if they didn't charge a multiplayer fee the hardware would be more expensive. (PS3 was more expensive vs Xbox for quite a while)

PS3 also had built in WIFI, more usb ports, various card readers, Blu Ray, rechargeable controllers without an added peripheral, these are some console features the 360 did not have which may explain some of the higher cost.

you know what's even dumber than having to pay for xbox live? having to pay a monthly fee to use netflix on your xbox. what a money grab

That excuse? Xbox and PS3 games do not have dedicated servers, just matchmaking servers that point people together. I bet my old PC could have done that(provided it would have appropriate bandwidth). Developers are generally left responsible for their own games anyway, that's why some games have randomly had their online multiplayer disabled, they took down their matchmaking servers. The matchmaking servers don't cost MS money except for the titles that are published in-house, like Halo. The money you give them is essentially 100% profit. You wanna use Netflix? Better have XBL Gold, because that definitely uses Microsoft's bandwidth and servers, it's not like netflix's has their own. As for the store and the friend's list stuff, that should pay for itself, you know, with the stuff people purchase from the store. It's just a moneymaking scheme, but because they were the first, they can charge, because they must be the best.

What I don't get is that even when I paid for XBL gold, the main UI was still riddled with ads. Stream has ads, but it is OK because I don't pay for it. Even in the rare instances where I do play a game or two on my xbox, I don't miss XBL. The randoms on XBL were almost all people who I wouldn't dare converse with(and remember, I had to PAY for the privilege of playing with these people), and Party Chat? I can use mumble for that on my PC and get game overlays, or I can use Steam's built in group chat, which is surprisingly solid. As for the XBL store being worth paying for, I can use Steam for that experience as well(bonus points if Big Picture mode), it's a pretty excellent store, and it has even more full games on it. Almost any game I could ever want is on steam. Not only that, but it has Free to Play titles, so I don't even have to buy anything if I want to sit back and play a game. It isn't as integrated with the major social media sites as the xbox, but Steam's got an excellent UI, especially the controller keyboard, and if you've ever typed with the onscreen xbox keyboard, you know how bad a UI can be. I'm not typing out novels within steam, but I'm getting much faster speeds than on the xbox, and I don't hate myself while using it. It's fast and efficient. I've been planning on building a HTPC, and it will have decent enough hardware to run games at reasonable settings. I wasn't going to bother with playing games on it, but Steam's Big Picture has impressed me to the point where I'm willing to wait and spend a bit extra on my HTPC for some things I ordinarily wouldn't want.

The PS3's interface kind of sucks. It took me forever to learn it. This has nothing to do with online, but it's a point I felt I had to make. The store's selection is a bit lacking, but what the PS3 does correctly is that it offers a premium model, while still allowing Free-to-Players online gaming and shopping capabilities.

In all honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to paying for some sort of Steamium Membership(that pun...) to go with the free service assuming it had decent perks, that's how good Steam is. It has a better store than XBL, better online experience than XBL, and it doesn't require I buy anything or pay to use it. (OK, I lied, you need to purchase and/or activate one thing to get full account status, at least before, but a $0.99 TF2 addon or some random indie title would suffice)

You don't need to charge for a good online experience, but MS just chooses to charge for theirs.

Really? that would be personally preference. I know a couple of people that don't have TV but instead get everything from an antenna or netflix, but they use the ESPN app on the 360 all the time. For some that would easily pay for itself. Even though I don't agree with you needing gold to get netflix, but still 60 bucks isnt a inconvenience that would keep most from not having it. While I stopped playing console games for the most part, when I did pretty much everything that wasnt exclusive on the ps3 I would play on the 360 or PC. 360 does have better graphics in most multiplatform games(and better controller), Also has a more powerful GPU inside of it what can really help on the more poorly coded games. PS3 has all that FPU performance but you need to toss mo much money into development to get it optimized correctly. Sure online on the PS3 is free, but no way to have a live voice chat with someone who is playing a different game. Really the only things that gives PC users a better/equal experience is Steam, Most games have vary vary crappy friend support built in. Steam is the closes thing to being a competitor on the PC side, though steam still lacks off line messaging which Origin can do fine. Voice chat is better implemented in most games on the 360 as well, sure a lot of ps3 games have it as well but Mic quality tends to be lower.

I have used both systems Xbox is like using iOS, it just works everything is quick and everything it optimized nicely. Want to search the store well just click the button and their you go no having to open a separate app just to browse the store. The OS running on the 360 makes the plan and old look of the psp style dashboard seem really old, i thought it was ugly on the psp and didnt get any better on the ps3. PS3 is like using android but the older gingerbread/froyo, but then take out all the open sourceness and give it only a few features. Sure the PS3 can do blu-ray but the other media functions suck, ONE WORD Cinavia. Why people would support a console with Cinavia installed is beyond me, people forget sony is one of the worst when it comes to greed. Though I really like how long all the operations take on the ps3, Oh want to go look at your trophies, NOPE you gotta do a long sync operation. Want to go look at the store, NOPE gotta load a separate app that takes a few seconds longer then it should. And don't get me started about how long it takes to update the damn thing, even simple game updates take FOREVER. People pay for xbox live and get better Software because of it, two years from now 360 will have a even newer dashboard to keep up with the times and the ps3 will still be using that old clunky interface and the friend support will still be lackluster.

360 users pay money and get more and more features every year, users playing online just have more things to do on this system.
PS3 users don't pay money and know what they are getting, they would probably just wait till the next console comes out for more features. Same mentality as the wii and it shows

Also don't forget most people don't use pc's, its a choice between these two. PC may be better but not everyone has that choice.

These discussions are always so hilarious, in the meantime im playing my games on both my high end gaming pc "which I built" and my console "ps3" which I purchased to enjoy the exclusives which btw are some mighty fine games!

Does any of this matter..?

Who plays either any more. I've had 2 Xboxes now and could care less because PC games are superior. If Sony wants to impress us with statistics, release your new consol before the Xbox720..   bcz, nothing is impressive with either and everyone is waiting for the next gen, not stats on last gen sales. derp!
